Dodgy Aircon on mk2 172

With the hot weather yesterday, had the aircon on automatic and set the temperature to the coldest it would go (about 16deg C I think?), the fan was on full but the car didnt get that cold. With my old Cavalier having the fan on full gave you a massive gust of air into the car, but on the Clio I just seems to be a gentle stream of air. Does this sound right ? Also I would have thought it could handle hotter temperatures than we have, I mean the Clio is big in places such as Spain which is a lot hotter.

Maybe it needs re gassing? Mine is fine. When I first get in the car in these temperatures it automatically re circulates the air inside the cabin rather than sucking in hot air from outside.

I had it set on minimum this morning for the drive in with a fan speed of 3. I had to move my right vent as it was freezing my hand on the wheel!!!

Sounds iffy to me. Mine was working fine yesterday, thank god. Got in the car after work, select min on the climate control, and bathe myself in some seriously cool jets of air.

There is a setting below 16C called MINI, which just keeps it blowing ice cold air out, rather than reaching 16C, but even setting it at 16C in a hot car should give very cold air. Something doesnt sound right - I went out in mine yesterday and had it set on 18C and it was blowing ice cold air out at quite a rate.

If you put your hand in the air stream, does it feel air conditioned? - it usually has a distinct "feel" to it, where it feels refrigerated rather than just cold air.

Perhaps your air con unit needs looking at by the dealer

You air con certainly sounds like it is working better trhan mine, the air does feel conditioned coming out of the vents, but its not as cold as I think it should be and there isnt much of a gust even at full fan speeds. Do other people get a powerful gust from the vents or just gentle gust as I get?

I had to get my mk2 172 re-gassed, it was only 10 months old. It certainly sounds although that is your problem.

You really can tell when the air has been "air conned" cause as mike said you can feel the difference to it, and the air smells different to if that makes sense???

and as said before you can go lower than 16C by selecting mini.. same goes with 26C you can go higher to maxi.

You should get it fixed under warranty.

*edit* oh, and when on full blast it really gushes out at you really fast and makes quite a bit of noise, not just a light breeze. sounds like something is wrong with yours.

PS. Have you tried the demist button ?? ;)

The stupid thing is you can hear the fan going really fast, but not much seems to be coming from the vents, I wonder if one of the flaps is sticking/broken that directs the airflow to th various outlets?

My husband told me not to turn the temperature down to 16 with the air con on - but I have forgotten the reason he gave for this.

Girlracer,

Im sure its ok to turn the temperature down to 16, else why would it let you? Does the air gush out of your vents when the fan is on full?

Turn it down to 16 when your air-con is off. If you keep it on all the time, your car could use up to 25% more fuel - so I have read. If you keep it off generally, I think you have to run it once a week or something like that.

To save fuel push the resurculation button as this refrigerates air already in the car and stops it from cooling hot air from outside which will also save you a few h/ps..

  Clio 1.6 16V

The recirculation button is also great when stuck behind the 30 year old non-eco friendly no.9 bus!! They reckon a ungfull of that stuff is equivqlent to 40 fags!

Chris I think you need to take yours along to Reno and get the whole climate system/operation checked out. It doesnt sound normal ;). Ive been running mine at 18deg the past coulpe of months on both the 172 and 1.6. Both of them are blowing loads of cold air after about 1/2 mile or so.

Thank the lord for my 172...outside today was 28oc...in traffic I had the aircon cooling me down nicely at 16oc...the interior felt like ice....although the Cup is .2 faster to 60...any cup owners would of been baking in the traffic jam i was in !!!....172s are cool lol

Just an old joke.. but ye have you seen it ! its sends shivers all over me (that might be the aircon though)

I did lots of miles today (80miles duel carrage way and then a lot of around town, stuck in traffic etc, and then 80miles back down the duel carrage way) with the aircon on 95% of the time and only used a little bit more fuel than I expected....also got loads and loads of flies weighing me down

And a surreal 10 mins driving through thick fog!!

GR, dont think it wasnt any thing like 25% extra, although I know older aircon models do use loads of extra fuel....

Well Ive got it booked in for Wednesday next week to try and fix the 4k buzz/rattle (3rd attempt!), so Ill get them to check out the whole aircon/climate system, although knowing them they will just say everything is fine.

  172, Tiguan

problem is mate theyll do what my garage does and fix the climate but totally forget about the first fault.

LOL! you then have to book it back in.

----------------------------------------------------------

0.5 sec quicker on paper and more in reality !

Anyway back to the original thread:- Buy a Cup and you will never have to worry about whether your Aircon is working, or not !! LOL !

0.5 seconds my ass..

.1-.2 max...

And if you open your windows cause you too hot I gaurantee I will be flying past you.

Dont forget not only is the Cup:-

89Kgs lighter = Faster

Lower = Faster (Less drag)

Uprated front suspension = Faster (better tranfer of power to front wheels)

No aircon = Faster (remember even switched off it is still being rotated)

Oh really, stop me, Ill split my sides laughing o.1 secs difference LOL!

Lower = Faster (Less drag) - Ye okay 3mm lower wow thats gonna make a differince when going to 60mph you idiot. Why do you think the porche spoiler doesnt even come up till 80mph..

Uprated front suspension = Faster (better tranfer of power to front wheels) Again LMFA uprated = 3 degree camber adjustment for better turn in, the camber adjustment will acutally increase friction between the tyre and the road, so you just shot yourself in the foot with that one, the only thing it does do is give improved turn in.

No aircon = Faster (remember even switched off it is still being rotated)

Oh please this whole aircon saps your power is a load of crap, especially when its not even on.

Oh really, stop me, Ill split my sides laughing o.1 secs difference LOL!

Same engine mate, the only true difference is yours is passenger lighter, which would equate to 0.1-0.2 difference. Ask people who have raced against Cups in real life, the dont pull away.

Note no disrespect is meant to the Cup, its a fantastic raw car, but some owners need to get their heads screwed back on.
And I laugh my ass off when I see people claim sh*t like that..

lol, ok ok, was just teasing :D - guess that when you arrive, you can spend that extra time saved washing off the sweat before us air-conned boys arrive 0.3secs later! :)

g

All I can say is that is you are stuck in a traffic jam on the M1 in this weather, aircon is a god send, once yourve had it theres no turning back!

And that demist button.........;)

Long Live Aircon....this Saturday is going to be an absolute scorcher.....but in my 172...hopefully the heat reflective screen will keep the heat down and the aircon will be on.....hopefully I will find a couple of Cups to race......they will be easy to spot as they will be sweating and have the windows open lol

Sometimes it isnt about saving money it is about quality of life !!!

at least I can get a nice tan on my right arm. You lilly white Aircon brigade have to keep your windows shut if you want it to work properly ! LOL

UPDATE:

Car went in today to be fixed, they agreed that the aircon was not working properly but hadnt found the cause. Its staying in tonight and tommorow so they can take out the dashboard and start investigating. Bit worried that its got to be stripped down to this extent but if the problem gets solved then Ill be happy.

or do what they do to me,

strip the car down, find the fault, dont have the part, put the broken one back in and WAIT WEEKS for the part, then they dont ring you, then when you finnaly go for the new part its the wrong one........
