Does it cost a shedload to run a 172

  Shed.
Starting to seriously toy with the idea of a ph2 now. Dont care what colour, as long as its had it's belts done, i can afford to buy one straight off without finance, afford to pay the insurance and tax, and have a decent whack of cash left to be able to pay for petrol and even save if i really wanted to, or have a social life. I could even afford to pay for new tryres if i needed them on short notice and also servicing. I wouldnt be modifying it beyond a set of springs and a few other very small things.

Are there any hidden costs, aside from things going wrong. Something which would really kick me in the teeth sideways.

Ill be 20 at the end of the year and i intend to start looking seriously sometime early next year after christmas and birthday has been and gone. I KNOW most of you will say wait till your 21 etc but im not up for advice like that. Ive wanted a sport badly since i was overtaken by a 182 at the age of 17 lol. love the looks, interior, everything.

......Also love the idea of being able to remove the renaultsport badge at the rear, and put 1.2 badges on it ;)

  AMV8, Mk1 Golf
work it out say 32mpg ish @ £1.19 per litre,

things to be aware of, service costs, labour time, costs of parts like break pads/ disks all more expensive than a 1.2

i got my ph1 at 19 , im 21 now with a ph2 so its easly doable

  M4 LCI, X1, ZX10R
Cheap to run for the speed really.

Tyres £50-60 a corner
Brakes are cheap from GSF
MPG around 40 mpg on a long round and 30-35 mpg generally.
Cheap to service.

I'd say check for the Cambelt change and the exhausts.

My gearbox went at 40k and 4 years old after having a easy motorway life and a few others have seem to gone also, so listen out for noises and knocks.

come buy mine michael! its had all the belts done

sorry lol, want a ph2.

are the gearboxes really that bad? i thought they could last well up to 100k and beyond, i know the JC5 is made from toffee but ive not hear of them screwing up.

Really im looking at a £4500 - £5500 172 ph2 no older than a 52 plate with between 40 and 50k on the clocks with both belts done (they do exist lol). i expect they have all been battered about and dont expect to find a mint one, although i can take care of most cosmetic damage myself as long as its nothing more than a scratch or scuff.

Exhaust falling off would give me a good excuse to buy a new one :star:

  Phase 2 172 Cup
buy my Cup for 6k ;)

few bits on it which have made such a difference to it, handles like a go kart and pulls very well.

Its in great condition and had the belts done and major service about 500 miles ago

Should be the first advert in the sales section

  Turbos.
Cheap as chips to run really, especially when you indepdently service it and use parts from GSF as mentioned. I used to get 40mpg too!

TBH my mpg is probably about the same as my old 1.4. The big difference is insurance and the fact petrol has almost doubled!

Parts are about the same, tax is a little more but spread over the year obviously but very cheap for the pace imo

  AMV8, Mk1 Golf
remember the ph1s are cheaper (alot cheaper to tax)

by 2010 the ph2 will be £270 a year on tax

  123D Coupe + MK1 MX5
Depends how you drive it.

Drive it like a human and it's no more expensive than the next car =]

  M4 LCI, X1, ZX10R
I sold my 53 Reg FF172 with 44k on the clock months ago under £5.5k budget, so £5.5k should be more than enough really.

They are loads about and it's a buyers market at the moment.

As opose to the way that Giraffe's drive them?

Listen mate people are quoting prices night and day on here, people might get 4 tires for £350 whilst others might get 4 for £200 so i would take every price you hear on here mildly with a pinch of salt.

As for running costs, get a clio thats been cherished. Any renault that suffers from neglect can have serious implications on future ownership as far as reliability goes. I got a minted Ph1 with one owner for the past 7 years and still had to change the odd bearing, coil pack etc etc...

I have to admit though putting petrol in it isnt as bad as i thought it might have been, im getting about 33-36 mpg, canny grumble.

  Clio 200
^^^

agree with danny on that, only bits ive had to change on mine are the usual wear and tear parts which arent too expensive from gsf.

as for running costs its cheaper to run the 172 than my mates 1.4 fiesta obviously excluding insurance/tax

Mike, only go for a sport when you really can afford one. I went for one too early and had to sell it, but then bought again when I could afford it.

I know you have something against ph1's but they are going to be much more affordable and having owned a 182, 172 ph2, valver and ph1 172 the ph1 has been my overall favorite even thou they were all good cars.

Mine is going to be for sale with 45k on the clock and all belts done in 4 weeks time.

My 182 used to cost £40 a week on fuel, obviously more these days, thats driving to work everyday 30 ish mile round trip, only other big hits are theinsurance, raod tax and when things need replacing.

  1998 BMW e46 323i
no nasty suprises really. Get ready to buy new front tyres ever 10k i reckon, and obviously replace stuff that falls off.

I know mate, but im at the point where id have a fair bit of spare cash, i remember what you said to me when we were sat in little chef lol. i worked out i could have about £40 left a month back when i was 18, anwyays now ive worked out its about 200-300 spare at the minimum and thats after ive paid insurance, im only driving about 350 miles every 2 weeks now, and itl be even less when it comes to college next year as ill have no where to park....

I just dont want a ph1 because of the looks and the interior, i also want somehitng a little newer, in my opinion the ph1 is a bit dated now.and the prices of a ph2 are now much more affordable.

Oh and im not up for buying one soon, in about 5-6 months after xmas i think, i wouldnt say im in any rush to buy either, itl give me plenty of time to think things through.

  Shed.
indeed - twas a beast ;)

thing is if you def want a sport have one - they are fudging great cars

yer, i love them and i dont even have one. The reason i didnt get one back then was that it would have skinted me completely where as now ive got somehitng to play with and ive got a good friend whos a mechanic so i can get things done cheaply.

What you need to think is the actual price of the car will be a lot cheaper by then... be increasingly harder to find a mint one though.

No hidden costs that aren't mentioned on here daily... Did you think maybe there were some bills that you had to be part of a secret society on here to be allowed to talk about... ;) ?

And £5.5k will easily get a nice Ph2 172. If as you say, you have £6k you're willing to spend you're just into 182 money...

  ph2 172 ff
im 19 im running my ph2 just paid for the belts to be done and serviced, im happy its costing less to keep on the road than my valver and my golf did

  Clio 172 ph2
I've had mine 10 months and already spent £2500 fixing it!!! New rad, battery, gearbox, clutch kit, cam belt, aux belts, drive shaft... so be prepared for when it goes wrong!!! Lol...

  172 Cup (Iceberg)
Think it's the cheapest car i've ever run to be honest. I'm getting 38-40 mpg, all the parts seem cheap enough. Go for it!

172/182's are a great middle performance tool.

There ok on juice for the power they have and when things need fixing there not too bad.

The petrol they use is dependant on how heavy your foot is.If you tickle it around there really not that bad.And at least you'll have the power when you want it
