dolby digital or dts

which do you think is better??

im re-authoring a DVD and canbasicallychoose between having dolby 5.1 or dts 5.1

i watched the film in DTS and thought the surround sound was excellent on it.. however i havent tried it in dolby?

DTS is generally regarded as superior, but "better" is often confused with "louder", DTS output is often a little louder than DD which often makes people assume the DTS mix is better. The extra volume from DTS is especially apparent from the rear channels, I always bring the rears down a notch when watching a DTS movie as they can often be a little overpowering.

A great DTS mix will in theory outperform a great DD mix, but there are many examples of films which have had a superb DD mix which is superior to the DTS mix (to those that can actually notice a significant difference!) DTS was designed for 1.5mbps but is often compressed to half of that amount, where as DD is variable, and therefore more often than not can handle anything that is thrown at it.

If space is ever an issue go with DD, chances are you will never tell the difference.

^^agree with above. If you have decent equipment, you might notice a difference. Some DTS tracks are awesome (Gladiator, Saving Private Ryan), but to be honest most are much of a muchness on most systems. Almost all DVDs in this country use "half bit rate" DTS (768kbps) rather than "full bit rate" 1.5mbps. This compares to dolby which is usually 384kbps or 448kbps (although some say DD is a more efficient codec).

IMO if you are compressing a DVD9 to DVD5 then I would go for DD.

DTS is the superior format in it's correct bitrate. Watch one of the Superbit releases in DTS and you'll see why.

Personally I always watch DTS where possible, and it influences my DVD purchases to a small degree. Aways find the bass channels are a lot fuller, and the sound stage is also great imo.

Always thought the DTS mix on Fast 'n' Furious 1 was great too :)

oooo F&F was good, expecially the first race :) But I thought even superbit stuff was still 768kbps? I've bought a few japanese DVDs as they usually have full bit rate DTS.
