Door speaker replacement advice

  Megane 225+
My factory door speakers have finally given up - ripped & flapping about.

I'm looking to replace this weekend but need some friendly advice

I have a Pioneer 4 x 50W head unit from which I already run a pair of 6x9's on the parcel shelf & an amp with removeable 10" sub. I will not be running the door speakers via an amp.

But I'm not up to scratch on ICE

so

Budget - cheap so £50 max ish

Do I have to replace with 5 1/4" component speakers or can I replace with 5 1/4" 2-way or 3-way spec?

I've also read that I could possibly run 6 1/2" units (2way, 3way question again)with some spacers which I could easily laser cut in work from acrylic(is depth an issue?) - is this practical/worth the effort? as I will still want to retain my standard door grills

Also whats the minimum spec I should go for?

cheers

look for rms power not peak, the rms is the power the speakers give out constantly, most manufacturers clearly display '160watts' (example) but do nto clearly show the rms, make sure the rms is above the rms value of the head unit otherwise you are selling the head unit short.

really, you can replace with what ever you can/want to fit, but sticking to 5 1/4" is easier as you already have the holes etc!
if you already have good quality 6x9's, they will be running much higher rms and peak power, so really an ok set of door speakers will be good enough to compensate the 6x9's, dont spend too much, as the 6x9's will drown out the noise from the doors, but there will be alot less distortion because of the better quality and power handling.

depending how you want your sound to be heard experiment with fading to the front/rear, because your 6x9's are running from an amp this should not affect there use, but will make your door speakers louder/quieter in relation to the 6x9's and make it sound how you want it to!

if on the head unit you have a setting for 'loudness' as it is called on my pioneer, turn that down, this is the bass that is sent to the speakers, if you have a sub then you want your speakers to be crystal clear while the sub handles the bass to give an overall better sound system!

good luck!
