Drilled Airbox

  172 ph1
I was thinking of drilling my airbox, is this a bad thing? All im looking for is a little induction noise.

My name is dave by the way, hello everyone!

I have a modded airbox on my ph1 (round type). Didnt realise until a few weeks after i brought it. Basically the plastic feed on the airbox with the rivets holding it has been removed to leave a very big hole. The airbox is no longer in the normal position, it has been rotated so that the air feeds face directly at the air intake vent below the headlight and the battery has been repositioned sideways.

IMO in very hot weather, low down power has a slight loss but as the speed and revs increases and it more than makes up for it. Also you get a almighty induction roar when you fully open the throttle.

Also the standard air feeds have been removed.

no real point tbh. your only going to get poor performance due to heat soak(hot air from engine bay being sucked in) but it will make a little noise.

Like the sound of this. How hard was it to do?

please not to a ph1 172!!!!!!!!

just get a max power ik if all you want is noise. £20 and job done, you will soon have your airbox back on trust me/

whenever you mention modded airboxes you always get mixed opions. I think the only way i will find out is by trying i suppose.

Using the method above by jonny172excl..... you will eliminate the heat soak in my opinion as the only air coming into the filter is straight through the intake vent.

I have a day off today so i think i will give some different methods a try. Does anyon else have any ideas?

take air filter out, stretch some tights over the hole and put airbox back on.

will notice a deep roar just pray you dont suck up a stone lol

no i have gone of the idea of drilling now, much prefer the sound of rotating the airbox. that way i can put it back to standard.

so far airbox has been removed and moving on to battery

jonny do you have a picture of your setup?

sorry i dont, because my digi cam has broke.

you will need, a longer hose from the throttle body as the orignal one wont be long enough. Also you will need to remove the metal bar near where the original strap for the airbox was, so the battery can be turned sideways. battery leads should be long enough.

Took it out for a drive and there is definately an improvement, without a doubt. Especially notice it at higher speeds/revs. As for induction noise, well all i can say is wow!! it sounds like its on itb's.

Had a little trouble securing the battery in place, have tied it up at the moment using the strap which was fitted to the airbox orignally. How did you secure the battery.
