Driveshaft knocking, or somthing else?

Hi guys,

I've only had my 2nd 172 for three weeks now and its already costing me quite a bit to sort the issues that the careless previous owner didn't care about! I've just replaced the rear discs and pads, as the bearings were noisy. Turns out its actually the near side front that needs replacing. So pay day next week I'm getting front discs and pads and both bearings. However there is this knocking noise and its hard to say exactly where its coming from. It only happens if I'm pulling away at low speeds. Its very hard to pull away without it making the noise and you have to be very careful with the clutch pedal and go slowly for it not too. It had new engine mounts back in 2011 and it also has KTR solid top mounts. Surely it couldn't be the engine mounts? I know its a common problem so i bought uprated ones for my old Clio which fixed the problem. All I'm wondering is with all the other issues I've had could the noise be coming from the nearside drive shaft?

Any help guys would be most appreciated.

P.S I know this has been covered loads before! I have trawled through the search engine with out any specific help!

Cheers Rob.

If its when you have lock on, like pulling out of a T junction say. May be drive shafts, mine starting like tapping/ticking when pulling away at junctions... annoying but going to investigate at the weekend.

I had something a bit like that and it turned out to be the drivers side drive shaft, the female splined tube that links the male splined pole from the driveshaft to the male splined pole coming out the box was starting to wear. When I pulled away it clunked, was worse when pulling away in reverse. Might be worth a check if you are struggling, just take the drivers side drive shaft off and check the condition of that tube.

Cheers guys,

Theres no noise at all when i'm turning the car at any speed. literally just when i pull away, or if i boot while already rolling. Ive checked the car and allthough i've had new engine mounts the twisted dog bone mount hasnt been replaced. So I'm going to get poly bushes for those, and see if that cures the knocking!
