i may be mistaken but i believe there is i french law which means all cars have to carry a high visibility jacket and warning triangle.

Concentrate on roundabouts!
Every time you join a road be careful which side you are on, in all seriousness that is the moment you forget, you pull out of a junction and drive away on the wrong side, did it a couple of times lol!
The police cameras are not visible like ours, the hide behind buildings, trees etc and plain cars and use a Grey coloured tripod thing to take pictures so observe the kmh speed limits.
last thing, don't loose your toll ticket on the autoroutes, as they charge you the full price for the whole section!

obviously you will have fun at the toll booths trying to pay if you are on your own!!!
i believe you can get a direct debit set up or something, the camera's read a card/sticker that you place in you windscreen at you drive straight through...
also watch your average speed as you can be fined at the booths for being too quick between them!

The worst part is getting back to the uk because your so relaxed its easy to drive on the wrong side! I'm currenly living Toulouse and have done the drive to N.Wales a couple of times.
Its every man for himself out here, rush hours are mad, they dont seem to look when joining roundabouts, they carnt drive in the rain (in the south anyway) and dont even get me started on snow! Last week some guy was driving with his foot flat to the floor wheelspinning down the road in the snow doing about 2 mph and he had a look on his face wondeing why he wasn't going very fast! Loads of s**t cars out here too, very patriotic about there cars, rare to see one without a dent. I've probably onluy seen about 3 RS Clios the whole time i've been here (over 2 years)

love driving in France; as said, some of the roads are lovely - really do put ours to shame, they're really well maintained
they're not as busy as UK roads although they'll still tailgate you, even if you're the only two cars on the road:S
it's odd that their road deaths are twice ours, but may be it's a logistical thing as you're never really far from emergency help in this country whereas you could probably spend days upside down in a field in France and no one would know
night driving can be quite tiring as they're not as keen on all the paint/cats eyes we use
something else you could check out is how their speed signs work (esp. as you enter/exit villages), as that'd be handy

deaths could be cos most of them carnt drive and tailgating as you said Henry - and there test is supose to be harder than ours. There are some fantastic roads as said but there are also some stupid things like extra lanes appearing then dissapering casing bottlenecks
and they really carnt drive in the rain, it takes me twice as long to get home after work when it rains! often see 10 - 15 car pile ups (not too serious, just prangs) on the motorway on the way into the city

A word of advise for the toll roads............
When you get on a toll road - your ticket is stamped with a time.
If you speed between the toll booths, ( get to the other toll booth too quick ) you will be slapped with a fine.
You cannot leave the motorway area until the fine is paid either unless escorted to a bank/Cashmachine by the police.
The fines are also very hefty. Mine worked out at about 400 euros.
If you have a snooper ( or something similar ) use it - but DO NOT GET CAUGHT. It will be impounded, along with the car it is attatched to.
Enjoy the road trip.

I've heard about this but never ever seen it done. I do alot of miles in France and its never happened to me and always way over the limit, my mate drove us from Girona on sunday and must have been averaging at least 160kph and nothin was said at the toll booth. Just thought it was a rumour but maybe its not
