I was thinking about getting a D50 second hand and realise they dont make them anymore but I see the D40(x) or something advertised for sale in shops... whats the difference? Is the D40 a better model?

I'd say the D50 was the better model as you can use all lenses with it, eg the 50mm f1.8 prime, the D40/D40x can only use the AF-S lenses as they don't have a lens motor in the camera body.

I've heard a bit about this. Are the prices of af-s lenses higher than equivalent AF/DX ones?

Whichever you get it'll be a damn fine camera, I'm a Canon man meself but the Nikon gear is top notch, wouldn't go wrong with either model tbh.
