Duff top mounts?

  182 Trophy
Now I know the top mounts do not sit flush on the turret, but one side should be, shouldn't it?

My offside top mount is actually sat 10mm about the turret at it's lowest side, and around 20mm on it's highest. I've pulled it apart, and found the top nut underneath was lose, and evident of something breaking up, although I could not see what.

I've been experiencing a knocking noise, and I can see evidence where the top mount has been hitting part of the turret. Someone must have seen this before, I'm just curious how it happens, as I'm racking my brains and coming up empty.

I'm planning on getting some solid top mounts anyway, but I'd like my car to work until they arrive :)

Fred, what experience do you have with AST top mounts and the like? I'm concerned that where the old top mount as been knocking the turret and deformed it slightly (and it is very slightly, tbh), that something like the AST mount may be able to move around as well?

Now, I don't know if I was being a little bit too dramatic when I mentioned 10 and 20mm or whether it's gone back together better this time, but it's closer to around 8 and 3mm now.

While the top mounts may not be 100% right, I do not think they are the source of the knocking.

I took the cap of the top mount off and rocked the engine hard (by hand) and once each way I'll get a cracking sound coming from the engine mount. This is a brand new pattern part.

I've since cracked the bolts up a little more to no avail. I just wanted to check there is no special or particular way the mount needs to be fitted before first trying a bit of copper grease under it to eliminate any minute bit of slip causing noises, and secondly taking the mount back for another one.

Any suggestions?

Engine mount is new and appears to be the source of the noise, as it's still there with the top cap of the top mount removed.
