dvd to pc/360 question

hey guys and gals, i'll try and keep this simple lol.

basically i want to rip my dvd's to my pc then play them through the 360 onto my telly.

now as i understand it you never used to be able to do this without mce on the pc but now the 360 uses media player to media share i think video is now supported.

my questions are is this right and is it possible?

does anyone know of any user friendly dvd to pc software and what file extensions does the 360 play? looked on thier website but cant find the info?

yeah i htought that but i think as the 360 dont use media share connect anymore i think its possible to view movies, i already use the 360 as a media hub etc but wanna attempt to start making a video library so i can just choose the films i wanna watch instead of flicking through my collection.

is it easy to rip dvds into .wmv

just downloading a dvd cloner to see how that goes.

is that all i need to do to play them through the 360 e.g make sure they are .wmv files?

i think so

i'm still using media connect software that was first used to connect the 360 to an xp machine.

yeah thats what i was using but now upgraded it to use media player to share the media, have you been able to play vids throught the 360?

Sounds like you need an update for the 360 and as far as I've got i'm now stuck as I've not got Xbox Live - no updates for me

{Edit} Actually I might be able to get updates with Live subscription.... hmmm

Sorted. Thats very very cool. No need for Media Centre, laptop is always switched on and now it does everything I need it to do. Mucking Fagic.

tried this, works ok but downloaded hitch, converted it to wmv, connected 360, came up in the shared videos list,
when i pressed launch it said unsupported content..? and wouldn't play?

anyone know why?
