At a constant 75mph in 5th gear in our MK1 172, we get about 41mpg. Id personally want a better mpg from 1.2, but I have to confess that my 1.4 16v had miserable fuel economy. The 172 really isnt much worse (until you thrash it that is!)

As for Ecotek, some people reckon they work, others (including myself) think it doesnt. I personally got very wound up by the noise it made (I had one on my 1.4) so I just shut it off.

i couldnt even hear it on my old RT, and yes it was tuned properly!! It made the car feel much smoother when accelerating but i didnt notice a difference in MPG. If you do notice a noise you can get a silencer for it. I wasnt the only person to notice the smoothness as i did a test with a few mates, before and after and all 3 of them noticed a difference. Not psychological as i didnt tell them when it was open/closed

You get a little more air in and it "mixes" the "air/fuel" mixture. Should in theory be an improvement, but you have to bear in mind that if you are putting an air leak in the system, it will run lean. This may not be too bigger issue if you have no other Mods done, but if you then do the Air filter (Induction kit) and performance exhaust it will run too lean for the standard ECU to map properly.

Better mods can be done, agreed more money, but you get what you pay for in performance enhancements.

My 1.2 has crap economy on the motorway..but then i never go that slow, and being in fourth for just a few seconds really makes a diff..

Flowing B roads doing about 50mph are the best for mine..i get to 48mpg.

Anyway yeah with the Ecotek, send it back! Ever heard of the saying "If it sounds too good to be true, it is too good to be true" ?!

I have an Ecotek, and I think it is great.

It was noisy to begin with, but then it will bed in and be a lot quieter.

Without it (or with it closed off) I get avg 29 mpg. 32 with it open, and a lot more throttle response, espacially in 5th between 60 & 60mph. My accelleration is much faster with it open. Overrun is much smoother too.

Fitting an induction kit/air filter later is not a problem, as you just re-tune the ecotek.
