Either my inlet manifold or Exhuast has come off need help...

Hi there last nyt i pulled off on a island 2 seconds later the car made a noise which sounded like my splitter had come off and was scrapping along the floor so i pulled over the sort it out, and when i looked it wasnt hanging off so i tried the starting it up again and it sounded like a bag of nails, kept banging and a loud popping nise and the more rev's i gave it the louder the popping became.
I called a mate to give me a tow as i didnt have a clue what was the matter. He told me that either my inlet manifold was cracked or my exhuast has come off???

Can anyone give me any help as i dont have a clue what to look for, or what else it could be if its not the inlet manifold or the exhuast???

Thanks alot Chris

it sounds rather serious mate, very hard to diagnose over the net, id get someone to have a look who is mechanically minded just to be safe

the inlet wont have come off, it wouldnt run if it did at all

unless the whole running of the car is much louder (all the time not just on pops and bangs) then it's not going to be a hole/gap in the exhaust. Also a hole in the exhaust will get much louder if you apply any throttle.

If the inlet manifold is cracked, you might be able to hear it hissing. it will run like s**t. Probably significantly lean, which could explain the nasty backfire your getting. Have a good scout round for a whole in the inlet

I had a crack exhaust manifold a few years ago...

One pipe came completely loose from the mounting plate (to the head). First there was only a small crack in the exhaust manifold making it sound very very raw and loudish. When the pipe came loose completely...it started banging and rattling it's ass off.

Ive only had the car a week :( not good :(

yer its popping banging and rattling like mad, sounds like a right bag of nails, i thought that something had gone in the top of the engine :S could this be the case? i need to get a pro to have a look really asap.

what engine is it? Surely if you run it with the bonnet open it will take anyone seconds to locate the source if the noise is that loud.

It had new oil in it 2 weeks ago before he bought it!!!! I think you need to spend more time locating the noise. and answer ur phone god damn!!!

Ok mate will have a read.

My dads just had a look and suspects the head gasket has gone, any one know any more information for me on this?

take the oil cap off, if its coverd in what looks like mayo the hg has probably gone, also check your water level and see if thats fine, if its gone again could be the hg

took it off and it looks normal

Could it be the exhaust gasket?

yes it might be something to do with the exhaust. We'll never know unless you run it with the bonnet open and find out where the noise is coming from. If it's blowing from the exhaust, you'll be able to feel it blowing as soon as you get your hand near it.
is a video a possibility?

If the head gasket is gone, the oil will look like chocolate milkshake.

Hold a rag over the exhaust as the car is running. If there is a leak, you will hear it as the pressure rises. If not, the car will bog down and may even stall.

I'm sorry but it sounds like neither you or your dad have a clue about whats wrong with it. I would stop guessing and start gathering facts.

When it happened what were you doing? did you hit anything in the road?
When you said there was a scraping sound have you actually had a look under the car for anything hanging low?

My 2p for what its worth.

Firstly I would do as a couple of members have suggested. Pop the bonnet and whip the engine cover off (assuming it has one on)you can have a good look at the inlet manifold and the exhaust manifold from here. The chance of the inlet manifold cracking is slim to non so would almost rule that out. Check the exhaust manifold (down the back of the engine) grab hold of the runners and see if theres any play or get someone to lay underneath the car and push the ehaust up and down whilst you look from the engine bay. If the manifold has cracked or a runner has come off then you will see it.

However, from what you have described my money is on a tdc problem. If theres a weak signal from the TDC sensor you will get loud banging whilst cranking. Whip the tdc sensor off and have a look at it, the grinding noise may have been something getting inbetween the sensor and the fly or the sensor itself may have moved and made contact with the fly?

Try these and report back.

found out what the problem was, someone had put a plug in too tight or not tight enough and the plug had movement and eventually come out, so got to get that sorted out now. :( hope it hasnt stripped the thread in the head!!!!!
