electrical fault/water in petrol, warning light

  clio dynamique
today was driving down godstone road and as i got to the traffic lights, i noticed on my dash board it had a warning light come up. i looked this up in mnaul, and the light is to do with electrical preheating or possible water in the fuel.
so what i did, was turned it off then back on before lights went green, and it went away.:)
i pulled onto the M25 at godstone and turned off at junction 11 heading onto the m23, as i was about to join the m23 i noticed the light had came back on, but was to late of course to pull off the motorway. i continued as far as i could, but all of a sudden the engine started reving rather high and my foot was down on floor, but i was slowing down. i could not move at all:S . so i pull onto the hard shoulder and turned it off for a few minutes so i could drive to a safer place to look at it closer.

as i turned engine back on,the light went away again, and has not come back since.
does anyone know what has happened? or has it happened to anyone else?

thanks alot,

mark
