Emissions light on steady

Started my car earlier from cold and initially the warning light came on with the wiggly line and it seemed to be in limp mode and restricted to 3k.
After turning my car off and then restarting it, that light went out and the emissions light came on and was steady!
I don't want to be spending a fortune on fixing this, is there a common fault that comes up from this generally that i could start to work from?

i dont have a clio yet but so far when i have seen emissions light problems its always easiest to get the code for the fualt (could be o2/lambda sensor) in the exhaust may be a good place to start!
