Emmisions help with a zetec engine?

  53 Clio's & counting
i know its not a Clio but im hoping one of the tuners on here might shed some light on this for me:

i am trying to get a 2000 year 1.6 16v zetec ford escort though its emissions test, and cant get it to pass, ther CO drops to just within limits at 0.018% after coming down from 0.757% (limit being 0.200%) but the lambda reading wont drop any lower than 1.043, and the limit is 1.030, iv fitted a used good lambda but to no avail, though the lambda wires in the engine bay have been crushed at some point and the wires were showing, i taped them up quickly, should i strip them back, and cut out the bad bits? Any other ideas without throwing money at it? lol

cheers guys
