Engine help.

I am about to buy a Clio Fidji 1.4 (1992) off a friend. He says that the car does not have a CAT or an ECU, However a mechanic who i know from work experience that i did at my local renault garage says that it does have an ECU and a CAT. Does anyone know which of these facts is correct and which is wrong ? (or even know of anywhere to find the answer to this)

I think it does have a cat and ecu. Its easly to see anyway just have a look you cant miss it. I would also phone another Renault Garage if you have doubts about it or feel unsure.

  FRST and 106 GTi

nope.. if its the 92 one it doesnt have an ecu and no cat.

Its the E6J engine (energy) with a solex 32 or equivalent carb.

hint: make him test the cylinder compression first!!! just to see how healthy it is. 9.5:1

Dead easy to tell. Does it have a CHOKE lever situated on the dash to the right of the steering wheel? IF SO, NO ECU NO CAT. No choke lever means monopoint injection with cat.

Hope that helps.

Rite the car does have a Choke leaver.

If i was to fit an Induction kit to this car what extra work would be required?

Ive heard off a friend that an induction kit would also require for the Air / Fuel screw to be fiddled until the car idles at 850rmp and another friend says that i would need to refloat the carb...

Anyone any idea on what would need to be done ?

not really an inductrion kit for a carbd motor - a bolt on filter will do the trick, and yeah usually you need to muck about with the mixture and idle settings to get it tuned properly, dunno about refloating the carb tho?.....

Well the Engine is an Energy engine and it has the three screws on the air box...........

K&N say their induction kit for the Mk1 clio 1.4s suits the type with 3 screws in the airbox.... so i duno if this would be the right one or not ?

I really want to get a good throaty sound from induction but it is looking like its gonna cost me a fortune

Are you saying I cant fit an induction kit to my 1.4 RT? Its from 91 and is only a single point injection. And whats an ECU? I thought that was the thing that controlled your engine, ie what you got chipped. And I know they sell chips for my car. But mine also doesnt have a choke leaver, it does it automatically. Which I also thought was something the ECU did, but someone said that if it was a choked model it doesnt have an ECU. God I am confused.

If your car has a Choke, It has no ECU and an Induction kit wouldnt be rite

If your car has no choke, It has got an ECU and an Induction kit will fit fine

Ah right. So i can have an induction kit then, good. I am glad cos i am going to be hitting the mods this summer for the first time and an induction kit was on my list.

Be carefull though mate.

Some later cars with carbs have an Autochoke!! But if it is singlepoint Injection you can fit an induction kit. Where as a carb requires a bolt on filter.

Nova GSi has Single point over a Sri which has multi point. But both can have induction kits.

I was hoping to get an induction kit for my fidji when i get it but its lookin expensive now :(

Bolt on Filter (or 57i kit ???)
Mechanic to Setup the Idle and Air/Fuel Mixture

Dont even know weather ill get a good sound from a bolt on kit.

Have to be a bolt on filter mate.

Ideally you need to fiddle the carb mixture to make the most of the extra air flow. Will run fine I would imagine. Old vauxhall NV lumps would run fine but tweeking them mite yield a tiny power increase.

A carb doesnt suck all that hard, so dont expect a sound anything like an induction kit mate. Gives a bit more of a deeper growl at high revs and makes a sucking noise lower down. But you may be dissapointed.

The bolt ons are "usually" cheaper than an Induction kit mate. K&N, GreenAir, RAMair all do the bolt ons. Ramair are cheapest and are foam as are pipercross where as K&N are Gauze Material!! Have to check the applications though.

I dont fink ill bother getting a bolt on filter cos its all that money for a bag of sh*te really.

Dont see any point in bothering cos im not gonna get any gain from it :(
makes me feel bad about the car im buying.

Ahh well. 1 less thing to put my insurance up. Not gonna bother with an exhaust cos i hate that Typical Boy Racerish "Blowing" exhaust style sound lol.

I am baseing my Improvement in sound on Vauxhall lumps.

However may be different. buy one mate and if you dont like it sell it.

Nottrying to put you off but better to be honest. Speak to some people with 1.4s on here and ask about exhausts. They arent too bad mate. Think the K-TEC ones are meant to sound good!!

Cant really afford to pay out £150 for better sound. I was hoping i could just spend my £42 on an induction kit :(

Oh well. Ill just have to stick to my Interior styling and ICE for now :)
Ill get some pics of my beauty up when i take collection on 25th March (while to go yet)

Nice. Enjoy the car mate. If you ever have any problems come on here.

Unfortunately mate smaller engines like that dont respond so well to tuning for sensible amounts of money!! Some people on here have some nicely tuned RTs but they are Injection.

See you mate

I come on quite often now cos its a nice community, get to look at peoples coments and learn from others replies. im not gonna do any tuning seing as im 17 and its gonna be my very first car.

yea mate - my first car was a mk2 fezzie, a bag of sh*te if ever i drove one - lasted 4wks before it fell apart and i got a nissan micra (oh.) for ages. To tell you the truth, unless you have a LOT of money to be burnt (which i def. didnt!) then learn how to drive properly in this car, and after you have a year or so of NCB (hopefully w/o points ;) ) then look to get a car you can really put a project to and be proud of. Embarrasing now i have a clio to mod, but i even thought about modding my micra a bit when i had it - i also learnt a lot about mechanics on that one, just undertook all the repairs myslef (clutch, head gasket, new cyl. head, etc.!!) and learnt along the way with a lot of abuse and violence !

cheers mate :)

Im gona do my ICE system, My Interior, and stick a Ibiza splitter on the front then i think ill have finished my modding until ive got some No Claims.
