Ok so here is the story, I currently have a 95 Clio 16v, full Mongoose system, Ram Air induction kit, home made heat shield and that is about it for performance. I am just about to buy a 2.0 16v Spider race engine. What has been done to these engines to get the 180 bhp they have. And BenR if it is not done already, what can you do, likes of balancing the bottom end and fly wheel so on? Are there any other mods I can do like cams, gas flow, porting that has not already been done. Also I need something to run this engine (ECU), would prefer something I can program myself, and change whenever I want with my a laptop. I will look at all options, so price does not mater at the mo, as I will only go for something that I really think is the best option and wont do it until I can afford it. But still I will look at all options, cheep and dear.

but i can do all the porting required, but i dont have a balancing machine, so i just do heads basically.....but at a good price.

the emerald ECU is a good one that you can program yourself.

i think the spider engines were running very high compression with a ported head to get the 180bhp especialy if you have to get the engine rebuilt about every 10k miles ??!!

Do you really have to have the engine re-built every 10k miles? Any further details on this?

its just i was looking at getting the high compression pistons in my 16 for the 2tlr but nick hill said it would shorten the life of the engine but a considerable amount
with the cam though you would be looking at around 190 195 bhp

Should you be buying a Spider engine if you dont know whats been done to it to extract 180bhp?

Whatever it is, thats a decent bit of headwork and hot cams to make 180bhp.

when me and brun went down to Hill Power last week, nicks got a clio running on a lumenition (sp?) ECU, you can plug your lap top into that and fiddle with it while you drive if you want, £400 or so i think.

It is standard with 180 BHP from Renault, so thats why im not sure what has been done to it.

Are those the engines from team think?

I looked into them but it was too much cash to risk on lots of unknowns (like were the engines any good and do they actually fit!)

If so, get the engines numbers and speak to Harlow Motorsports. They built them!!

The Spider is 150bhp .... its basically a willy lump. The extra power is meant to come from up-ing the compresion and and blueprinting. Seems like a big increase though as theyre meant to have std cams.

Cheers will do, yea it is from think, Engines have not been re-built so am going to do that myself to make sure everything is ok.
