Engine still revs high while in neutral

Posting in here as this topic doesnt really fit anywhere else - Moderators, please dont bin or move this post as im looking for some help here.

Had to sell my Cup, now got a W reg (2000) Fiesta Zetec 1400cc

When the engine is running after a while and I put the gear in neutral when stopping etc, it starts reving really high on its own, i mean like 4,000 + and keeps reving until I put it back in gear.

Tested this further by going on the motorway. Car is in 5th gear at 3,000 rmp, if I put it in neutral and take my foot off the accelerator the revs keep going up and it just stays there.

Its not the throttle cable sticking, ive checked that, what else could this be?

Im wasting loads of petrol, burning my clutch out at the lights and really p155ed off about this - if anyone is a mechanic or has any ideas of what the problem could be please let me know.

Cars out of warranty suck.

I used to drive Ford car. I am sure it is caused by the idle control valve. Just change it, or try to clean it if possible by the throttle cleaner.

i dont know about fords but ive had a similar problem on my 172 mk2, turned it on 1 day & it just started over reving. i turned it off tried again same thing ,left it off for a few hours & it was ok . i took it to hillpower & nick put it on the diagnosis machine and it turned out to be a problem with the accelorator switch, sounds like the same issue with yours.
