Engine Transplant advice...

Well, this is going to be a bit of an essay i'm afraid as i want to explain the whole situation... but here goes.

At the moment i have a 1.2 8v 1998 clio RN, as you can imagine not the most fun thing to drive, so i have been looking at changing the engine out for one out the the mk2 ph2's, 1.4 16v i hope....

The situation is basically, i have a good friend who has worked as a mechanic for over a year now and works for another friends dad. Anyway... he has 0 mechanics tools, but he has had a lot of experience. (Done two engine transfers, one was auto to manual, works there everyday and i would definately trust him) He has made me a deal that he would do me this transplant for free on the term that i buy him a basic starter 150£ mechanics tool kit, just to get him started.

So my questions are:

Is the proposed engine transfer really that difficult to do?

How much will i be needing to pay on engine with everything i'll need?

Does this sound like a good deal or too much of a risk to some of you?

All comments/help appreciated, cheers. :D

The trouble with a mk2ph2 engine is it will have a different type or power steering system and will have ABS.

Better off with a mk1 engine i should imagine, but its a bargain if you mate does it for that price.

Could never in a million years afford the insurance so the improvement of 35 bhp or so from the 1.4 16v would be a result.

Was looking at a 1.6 rsi engine maybe so it would be from the same time period. Would this work better?

yeh much easier fit but itll be just as expensive doing an engine transplant than buying a williams etc outright and insuring it

Really? How much am i looking at for the engine then? Because i thought it wouldn't be too bad as i would effectively be pay 150 labour.

I was looking at just buying a rsi as someone was talking about selling one soon on here. But sad as it sounds i do love my little 8v just not its performance.

no i meant the insurance you pay with a car with a conversion ie the car your talking about would be around about the same as williams

KEEP the 1.2 till its death mate and save until it breaks!
then buy a bigger engine later!
just out of interest how old r u?
mybe two years time a 172phase1 would be in you price rang plus two years no claims?
oh and yh dont bother with the transplant you will soon get bored with the 35bhp more power!
im bored with my 172turbo!250bhp
why dont you strip it an the rear and loose the spare wheel that will be as effective as 20bhp lol
