engine transplant help

right heres whats up my engine is getting on in years and i was to change it if i change my engine to a 16v do i need to tell my insurance or can i keep the car registred as a 1.4rt(dont think so but no harm in asking). how much for a reconditioned 1.4rt you think. and will a new 1.4rt engine fit in a 91 rt.

to change to a 16v would run into ££££££1000s, everything is organised different and you would need all new components(look at the engine bays in haynes manual). you would also need to tell insurance for the reason that if you had a little crash, fair enough they wouldnt check, but on the other hand if you take out a bus stop there gonna start lookin which would prob happen cos the braking system on ur 1.4 wouldnt be man enough.to put the 16v into anything other than something it was meant for *will* cost more than a 16v. as for the rt a few hundred exchange i would have thought, ask around for prices. but i cant stress enough how bad an idea it is to not declare a 16v motor in an RT. the knock on effect of one mistake could knacker you life up. not really worth it id say.

i know a lad that is a bit "away with the fairies" when it comes to cars!!! He started off with an RT or it mayve been an RSi. Anyway, it ended up with a 1.8 8v Rsi with a 2.0 laguna bottom end on carbs (this is what i was told, never saw the engine) and it was insured as an RT. It was lowered approx 120-150mm (if you parked next to a curb, you couldnt open the door!!!)

right i understand about the 16v i was just checking. but i understand there is a 1.8rt engine out there would it be possible to transplant this one instead. i think still 8v (dont want more than that the now). what would happen about the speedo would i have to change that to fit the 1.8 (i think i would).and would i have to change from a sohc to a dohc. or is that only with 16v.

cheers jamie.

I had a 1.8 rt before my 16v. Its a good but basic engine .. 8v, monopoint injection and runs at 95bhp. Not a huge increase over the 75/80 bhp of the 1.4 (depending on year)

A 16v convertion is a massiV task but .... if you source the parts from a crashed 16v can be done for reasonable money. One of my mates looked into it for going from 1.8rt to the 16v with Tortion Tuning and it wasnt a starship budget. He was getting the uprated rear axle, brakes, suspension all done to.

There in Witham, Essex. Give em a bell on 07949 200705. Tell em you got the number from Rob via Cliosport, might save you a few quid!

cheers m8 thats gr8 i think ill go for the 1.8rt engine thought. im still only 18 and the insurance dont go up much for the 1.8 but it does for the 16v. and i was only looking to transplant another 1.4rt because mine is old and sh*t. but a 1.8 would be fine for my needs. any idea of a proce and nething else needed to be changed for the 1.8 transplant.

would it alos be a good idea to change the fuel tank or not bother. and would it effect the current speedo. if so you is it possible to just swap over the speedo, oil e.t.c. panel.

I dont know what else is involved in putting in the 1.8 rt lump but its quite a rare car. Might need wireing looms, ecu etc. Could even need draftshafts and so on. Have you thought about the RSI engine? Its similar to the RT 1.8 but its multipoint injection and runs at 110bhp. Its best just to give the pros a call to get info and prices rather than let me ramble on.

I got my 16v when I was 19 and insurance can be done.

If you get the 16v lump though, as well as the power there loads of bits you can change over ... rear disks, tortion bars, uprated box etc ...

I have a sneaking feeling that the 1.8 RT clio 8v engine is the same as out of a Laguna.

My mate has one in his clio at the minute, and I know he is looking to change it. Give him an e-mail, and he might sell you his for a good price as it needs a bit of repairing done on it.

e-mail him at chriseltham@hotmail.com and tell him Tim Rudland pointed you his way!
