Engine Tuning

Hi Guys,

Just bought a 172 Cup and im wondering what are the best mods to improve performance on the Clios. Had a Saxo for years before so i dont know to much about the Clios at the moment!

Thanks

I want to use the car for a bit of tracking but mainly road use. I dont want to spend to much on the car. Im willing to spend around a grand. But dont really want to spend much more. Im more than happy with handling, brakes and so on. Just want to make it a bit quicker.

Thanks.

Second hand decent exhaust - there's a yozza in the classifieds. ITG filter element and a set of Cat 428 Cams + a map.

Jobs a good un and you should just sneak in under the grand mark. 185bhp no problems, 190 with matched inlets and a few misc tweeks.

Cheers

Seems alot of money for hardly any powergain. I dont know to much about the Clios but the Saxo Vts's were alot easier to improve power for that sort of money. Are the Clios generaly more harder to get more power from? I take it there a bit tuned already?

Thanks

RStuner, matched inlets, exhaust (with de-cat) and a decent filter are probs the cheapest before cams etc etc

in a similar boat to you and would go for inlets and a custom map if i had the cash spare

i'd probably also change the exhaust system, if only because the std system will eventually drop off from rot

suggested gains for these bolt on bits aren't half bad for an engine that's already in a decent state of tune imo - there's loads you can do as well, it's just that some bits add more than others

Pardon my ignorance but what is the RStuner and matched inlets? Never heared any of this from my Saxo days lol.

Cheers

some of the OE inlets are better than others (try searching for the RS inlet - could check to see if your car is fitted with one) but the ports/runners are smaller than the ports in the head

RS Tuner is a DIY mapping affair

really depends upon personal pref as some will enjoy mods that others might not - different filter boxes and decats can make a lot of noise, etc

You will not get much if any of a gain from changing the exhuast.

I would say decat, matched inlets, better cold air feeds and a custom remap. I wouldn't say cams are worth the money but thats up to you.

Theres not allot of power to tune from the clio engines without spending huge money BUT its not all about power. IMO low down torque and improving the general drivability is far more important on a road car then top end power.

Maybe consider spending some money on the brakes and suspension if your going to do tracks days.

I dont think it's harder to tune a clio than a saxo, just less people believe the pub figures. Things like exhausts and airfilters wont really give power hikes on their own (decat is probably most noticable) but can help with response, and be less of a restriction when you do start to do more. Port matched manifolds probably give the best gains £/bhp to start with

i bet all the saxo owners recon they have 170bhp from an exhaust and filter lol. your car will be alot quicker with better brakes and decent sus than with bolt on mods

Could not agree more, on here you will fine people are alot more sensible about figures. and as soon as some one "thinks" that because a RR has sed their new exhaust made their 172 make 190, everyone doubts it because we know its not true.

whareabouts in the northwest are you based fella? i'm over haydock way, come look at my car if you like and i'll clue you up about any mods, plus an idea of how little difference it all makes lol

Cool sounds good. Im from Northwich which in near warrington way.

And no all Saxo owners dont think that. They may think that when there cars have full breathing mods, cams, tbs and a remap though.

basically, don't touch the engine

suspension, decent brakes, maybe an exhaust, and learn how to really drive

I'd say do the handling first, then performance. I'd recommend you get used to the car before splashing out.

In terms of performance, I'd recommend this:

Service and get a general checkup.
Second hand exhaust - £200.
Panel Fiter - £35.
Inlets - £150.
Remap - £150/£250.

That should give you around 10-15 HP (depending on the quality of the remap and exhaust). I really wouldn't spend any more than that.

You can always keep your eye out on a clio that already has been modified. :)

i have found (and so have many on here) that weightsaving is also quite an improvement !!

I put in two 6,5kg Sparco buckets and lost the back seat. Lost the OEM steeringwheel (airbag) and put in a light deep-dish one. The OEM exhaust is also heavy as s**t .

Mine was weighed at 960 kg, and did 190hp on the rollers so you can imagine the fun..

(exhaust , ITG panelfilter, and remap did the 190hp, i think the rollers exaturated a bit)

For now i think im just going to get a pannel filter and also a decat. I have heared some people say that the Clio cup exhausts are really good standard and that the only thing really restricting anything is the cat? Also going to purchase a top and lower strut brace. Just been serviced so everything is running sweet!

Thanks

Make the car lighter like already stated. Back seats in the bin and lighter seats up front and lighter wheels too.

LOL @ the quoted performance figures for the mods. - without cams or TB's you wont hit mid 170's ''in the real world''

the stock exhaust is ok, but it will be as rusty as f**k and fall off soon anyway

strut braces are only decent if you bolt them through the strut tops properly, don't use the self tappers

Matched inlets= there is a group buy going on at the mo so chop chop to get them cheap.

decat + 2.5 through exhaust.
group n re-map.
itg panel filter

you will have change from a grand too

Sorry to dig this thread back up. But to clarify, for now im going to get an itg panel filter and a decat. One question will the decat be just as good with the standard system or is putting it in the standard system just defeating the object?

Cheers Guys!

instead of buying things like exhaust, remap, manifold etc i would wait until it needs its cambelt changed and get new cams at the same time OR just strip it out like everybody has said.
second hand throttle bodies?
