Exhaust- Standard vs Stainless???

  172
As per title, what extra realistically do you get from a stainless with and without a decat???
I've read that the 172/182 is fairly good standard and you don't get much extra (except noise) from adding a stainless?

Any info much appreciated as im thinking about putting a standard exhaust and car back on the car

Cheers

Decat, filter and a remap usually nets a couple of hp, like under 5.
An early 172 MIGHT also benefit from the RS lower inlet.

Standard cat and aftermarket exhaust really is the best option unless your easily able to change the cat every time you mot. That and dealing with the engine light.

Standard cat back not only weighs a tonne, will rot and costs a fortune. It's really only something for the realms of concourse and collectors to put back on the car.

Put it this way.. I had a useable OEM 1piece, not collector quality but functional. The factory fitted one was 1 piece cat back. No bites on here and two members fought it out on eBay for the sum of £15. That how popular the standard is.

Depends,

One guy I know of is still on a genuine backbax 4 years later. Before then he went through 3 pattern exhausts over 2 years. The quality of aftermarket items make the factory stuff look good!

Before anyone asks he's also running a Powerflex mount for the dogbone and kept an eye on his exhaust mounts.

I'm really happy with the standard exhaust. Sounds perfect for what I need. No drone etc and not too loud

The fact the standard exhausts are so expensive and destroy themselves so quickly is a massive down point for me, hate anything but standard sound.

  A terrible one
Had to replace a standard exhaust after 12 months(wife spent £300). Spent £500 on a stainless and 5 years later still looks like new. It's a no brainer if you're keeping the car, stainless all the way.

Custom stainless from a good fitter and forget about it, had mine over 4 years and never had a single issue. It's one thing on my Clio I never even think about.............

Regarding power you may gain a horse or two but you wouldn't even notice.......

Getting a full custom made stainless system made and fitted tomorrow. Not a bad price and a lifetime warranty so I am hoping it will last!
I am not after power, just the noise.
