Expert Help Please..... Yozzasport, Rentek etc.

  BMW M3
Right, this has been bugging me for over a year and its really starting to cheese me off as no one can find the problem.

Thought my last chance was to get some clio experts to help and possibly drive down to get it sorted.

Basically, when ever i accelerate i get a hissing noise from almost underneath the passenger footwell or back of the engine, low down. I thought it might be the manifold.

However, I must have spent a good 6 hours now in total over the year under my car checking all the system and im almost sure its not the exhaust or manifold. I have replaced gaskets and clamps many times and doesnt make a difference.

Ive been to 4 independent garages, one of them being the Audi Tuning specialist Star Performace and all of them have given different opinions of what the problem is, but all agree the exhaust is not leaking.

The reasons have ranged from, "its induction noise" to "your cat is broken" which its not as ive just replaced mine ( not because of their advise though)

Anyway, Star Performance said it sounds like there is possibly a gromet or something missing on the inlet but said its not bad noise and wont loose me power.

I havnt got a clue now what to think as ive even checked the car myself and am baffled, and no one can tell me a definate answer.

I was just wondering if any one would have any idea what this could be. Its really annoying me now lol

Thank you

Jus

have you put a new hole for an amp wire or something, could just be the wind comming in through a hole, or even the window seal

i have this noise mate, i think its becasue the grommet under the dash that the loom runs through is not correctly in place. ( i got an amp cable running through and it popped out) if not that i dont know either but i have the same noise, ur not alone

Cheers for replies. I realise its impossible to know by just description but thought id give it a go.

Basically, ive had the car over 2 years and this noise has only been around for 1 year. Started around the same time the Janspeed was fitted but might be a coincedence.

I dont think it is wind noise as it immediately hisses when i press the accelerater, no matter what speed im going. I could be doing well over a tonne, and if you drop the clutch the hissing goes away. At that speed you can hear it quietly hissing all the time if in gear, but is most loud when in a high-ish gear for the speed traveling and the engine goes under load.

Its far louder then an average turbo whine. It sounds like your letting tyres down when the sound is at its worst.

Im just a little worried if its not the exhaust.

Having just read over your posts agian.... do you think it may be induction noise (which has always been there) but i just havnt heard it becasue the hole from the passenger footwell to engine comp was covered, and now its not, hense im hearing induction noise ?

Cant imagine it being that loud and not hearing it before though.

Hmmmm..... think this may just remain unsolved through-out my ownership of it. Spent too much time, money and blood trying to find out.

I'd still say it has to be a leak from the exhaust somewhere. Has it been off and the joints plastered in paste?

I had a Metro GTI which did this once. It turned out that the silencers in the exhaust were filled with wadding which was being blown if you like when accelerating. It ended up blowing the back out of two back boxes as the wadding broke free.

Every joint in the whole system has been pasted and wrapped up etc.... and it made no difference at all. It doesnt even sound like its coming from the exhaust. Its like the left hand side of the manifold, but apparentley thats fine.

Ive been under the car as 4000 rpm (a bit hot lol) and no air escapes at all. All i hear is hissing and it draws me towards the mani but its too hot to really get close. lol

the cat to exhaust joint hisses on alot of 182's. does your exhaust have an adaptor for the cat (a small bit of pipe that goes into the main system and the other end has been flicked out). make sure this is pasted up really well and has a good seal all around (from the cat to the adaptor) and the clamp is done up tight (may even be worth getting a new one). if the adaptor thing has been pushed all the way into the system bring it out a bit and re-clamp it. from what you've said about it really sounds like this joint. the same thing happened on mine, i just re-sealed it and pulled the adaptor out a bit. seems more than coincidence that you had the janspeed fitted and its happened.

get someone to put 2 wet tea towels over the tailpipes while the engine is running, if you hear a hiss you have a leak, do it when the engine is cold as you'll also see where water is dripping out

Thanks guys,

Ive just spent too much time going under the blo*dy car that im fed up and giving up doing it myself.

As i said, the exhaust doesnt seem to leak at all. Star performance did the tea towel thing fred and they said its fine.

I replaced every clamp and gasket avaliable, and it made no difference to the sound. Every seal has been plastered in paste but no results from that.

It comes from under the passenger foot well. Which bugs me as there is nothing there to make that sound. Ive decided, listening to it today, that i dont think its induction it really does sound like the exhaust but come from the top left of the mani ( if looking from the back).

It ruins my driving experience .... press the go pedal and rather then hear the vroom of the Janspeed... i hear "tttsssssssssss" !

it really does sound like what i had. and it was the cat, i know you've said you sealed it all etc...
did they re-use the renault clamp to the cat or did the janspeed come with one? it doesnt need major amounts of paste, just a little all around the seal then clamp ontop. good luck with it dude. :)

Thanks mate,

I had my Janspeed fitted the first time, and since then have changed the cat and taken the janspeed off a few times myself. The sound has never changed. I have bought about 4 of those clamps and no diff.

I have even jacked the car up and used the lever off the trolly jack to jam between the seat runner and the accelerator (2-4k rpm), while i lean over to the cat and there is no air escaping and ive had my ear there and nothing..... the sound comes from the manifold area but it just too narrow to look up there.

I really do wish it was the cat but the amount of time and money ive spent trying to sort this, i think ill just give up and make do with "tsssssss"

5-10 hours of me under the car + alot of ££££ getting 4 independant garages to look for me too + all the gasteks and clamps ive bought..... oh, and the loss of bloody and also burns........ and what do i get..... NOTHING ! lol

Its un-fixable.

  Milltek'd 182
lol ah, well maybe its not that then!!!! haven't got a clue mate, sorry! maybe it will fix its self.....!

  BMW M3
Thanks for your help anyway mate... i was hoping it would just go away but its made the same noise for over a year lol

And changing the manifold would just be another expence that doesnt fix the prob lol.... maybe it will, but id prefer to find out its the mani first before i spend any more money.

If i can ill get my camcorder to record the sound and see what you guys think.
