Replaced the OEM air filter with a K&N filter and have just rang my insurance company (Elephant) to ask if this should be disclosed as a 'mod'. Expected them to say no as it's just a replacement element (not an induction kit). They quoted me an extra £35.

Fair enough or not?

So you replaced with an oem spec part and declared it?

I doubt the guy on other end of the line understood what it was.

Explain properly and it shouldnt cost you.

tell them it doesn't affect performance in the slightest, just makes it sound a bit louder. they shouldn't charge then as that's basically all it does

It doesnt make it sound louder. Is an oem panel filter made by different people.

Sorry mate , but i had to laugh when i read your post . Why oh why did you feel the need to ring your insurance company when it was only the element you replaced ?

Like Peperami said . The person you spoke to probably didn't realise what you had actually done . As soon as you mentioned K+N they most likely assumed that you fitted a K+N induction kit rather than just replace the element with a K+N jobby . Ring them back and explain more clearly .

After what I've been reading about insurance companies looking for an excuse not to pay out, I thought I'd double check to be on the safe side.

I'm going to write them a letter tomorrow, explaining that it's a replica of the OEM part.

I'll let you know how I get on.

It's not a replica, the K&N panel filters give improved air flow & better/quicker throttle response whilst retaining the original airbox....

The advantage a full induction kit has is usually the added benefit of an unrestricted cold air feed taken from the front of the car, (this can also have a ramair effect at speed), which will give added BHP throughout the rev range....Easily recognised because the cone filter is sealed within the induction pipework....

Cone filters will produce more intake noise than both the above, but would probably not match either for performance, (down to sucking in air already heated by the radiator & engine), this is especially noticeable in slow moving traffic where the under bonnet temperature is at its highest.....Easily recognised because you can plainly see the cone filter....

So, in order of performance;

1, Cone filter
2, Panel filter inside stock filter box
3, Full Induction kit

A k&n panel filter isnt an OEM part

OEM (original equipment manufacturer) pars are made by the same company that supplies Renault with air filters.

OE (original equipment) parts are made to the same specification but are made by other companies

a k&n filter is neither, its not made to OE spec

Wouldnt have bothered declaring that. If anything was said by insurance, not that they'd open the airbox i'd just say I paid a mechanic to do a service and he said he replaced the filter.
