Check the coolant temp sensor wiring and the fan control relay

If you've unplugged the sensor , that is all well and good for now, all you need to do now is work out whether or not it was to hot in the engine at the time it was still running.
These cars run an anti percolation feature if the coolant reaches near 105 degrees (somebody quote me if I'm wrong).

Another theory is , if the sensor was open circuit , the fan would run only when ignition on or engine running.
Therefore it would stop when ignition was off , as it is now as you've left it.
But yours was running with the car switched off , so my theory is the sensor was giving the wrong temp to the ECU or it was just too bloody hot.

If the sensor was in open/short circuit whilst the engine has been running it will default to fan on even when the ignition switched off and the key removed.

My understanding of the problem, and you can correct me if I'm wrong, is that the fan continues to run when the ignition is off and isn't running but as soon as it is on or the engine is running the fan shuts off?

If so I'd suspect a wiring fault to the fan control relay rather than the temp sensor itself.

Morning. Right just plugged it back on and the fan started up again. Turned ignition on still running. Started up and still fans running.

So basically no matter what the fans on.

It shouldn't have been hot as it had been parked up for hours after a drive and the front was in shade as I needed to wash and polish the bonnet and it wasn't on when I was doing that for sure.u

So ideas gents?

Thanks for the info Mick , I didn't realise these buggers still run when switched
off , but I do understand the anti perc feature when it's meant to be working ok
Cheers

heres the relays, found some water under the relays, so guess this is the likely cause of failure
