FAO: Anyone wanting cheaper car insurance...

  172 & RSi
Not sure if it has been posted before but I would 100% recommend anyone to follow the steps in this guide to reduce their car insurance.

I think everyone should have a go regardless of whether their insurance is due or not, as the savings you could make, make it worth the switch.

I'll give you my scenario....
I was paying £1700 on my 172 when I first got it as a 20 y/o with 3 years no claims, paid monthy at about £170 p/m. That was with Kwik-Fit, didn't really shop around at the time as I needed insurance straight away, was already with them, and they were by far the cheapest with my RSi, so assumed it would be similar on the 172.

Anyway, when I turned 21, I thought I would have a go at requoting myself to see if the change in age made any difference (nothing else had changed btw). Followed the above guide and managed to bring my insurance down to just over £700, or £68 p/m, with Churchill, saving me over £100 p/m :D

Let me know how you get on and post up if it works for you or not.

Cheers

Totally disagree, you would spend half your life getting quotes... giving your details/typing them in 100s of times and it makes no difference at all, the prices I got were exactly the same as going direct.

Using them sites means you cover more or less the whole market in a realtively short amount of time, and you can check you're getting the best deal.

As I said in the first post, its saved me over £1000 so I'm happy.

All IMO of course and I know some people don't like using the comparison sites, in which case don't use them, however I've nothing but good things to say, and no I don't work for them lol.

Well, for the policy I took, with Churchill, I actually put the details in on their site too to check the price and it was exactly the same. I know when you ring companies they can often get you better prices with discounts etc. that you might not get online, but I would say, if nothing else its good for showing you whos cheapest, then if you really want to, give them a ring and check.

Like I say, that guides been brilliant for me, and a couple of workmates have done it too and saved loads so it can't be a bad thing.

I'm with Adiran Flux , have been for years . They guarantee to beat any quote i get when it comes to renewal time , so thats always gonna be the cheapest for me lol ;)

As said above , going direct will 99% of the time be cheaper than any comparison websites .

If it was cheaper to go direct, surely Martin Lewis, THE "money saving expert" would mention it in the guide? Hes all about saving money and getting the best price, the only thing he mentions is...

"The car insurance market is very competitive and companies are desperate to retain business. Therefore the next step is to get on the phone and try to haggle (unless cashback’s available as that has to be via the net). There's often massive price flexibility, but be fully armed with the screenscraper’s cheapest quotes first.
The first port of call should be your existing insurer, after all if it can beat or even match the best quote it saves the hassle of switching policy. If that doesn’t work and you’re still in the mood, take it to a broker"

Actually, come to think of it, I'm sure these comparison sites mention on the adverts, the price you see is exactly the same as going direct to the insurer. If this wasn't true they wouldn't be able to claim it on national tv surely.

As per the other thread, is was paying £700 to insure the car, I tried a comparison site & I could not get a quote from the people I was with, I don't get it tbh.

Specialists like greenlight, noel dazely etc are the way to go imo, they actually know what the car is, most of the others don't have a clue.

Yeah that seems like a strange one that they wouldn't quote, no idea why lol....

The point I'm trying to make is, for anyone who has a spare hour and is interested in seeing if they can save some money, I would definately suggest giving it a go. You have nothing to lose by doing so...

I didn't make this thread to argue the corner for comparison sites, I don't give a monkeys what anyone thinks of them to be quite honest, makes no odds to me. I just thought it might help some people to save a few quid.

Obviously like I've said its not for everyone, and if its not for you then fair enough, all I can comment on is my own experience, which was saving over a grand.

basically the company you were with were ripping you off, that's all that has come out of it.

Have a look through other threads on the comparison sites, most think they are rubbish.

I'm out.

my insureance is up the start of feb so ive started looking about on confused etc, because i have a spoiler i only get 6 results out of 40+ insurers and does nto include the people i am with currently, but if i go to the website of the insurers who didnt quote, most of them will, some obvioulsy won't because of my age and only having 2 years ncb, some insist on atleast 3 and some 4 before they will quote. and of the ones i do get quotes from on confused, on their own sites, if i enter a fresh enquiry the prices are cheaper doing it my self? but generally IMO the only thing confused are good for are giving you an ideal of who have the cheaper quotes, but those tend to be the big guns like admiral and kwikfit.

Personally , i always phone insurance companys if i can rather than get an on online quote . Actually talking to somebody , especially somebody who knows a little bit about cars always seems bring better results .

Anyone mentioned Coilovers to any of the moneysavingexpert recommended insurers.

I have, and they all told me to jog on.

HIC ftw!

sorry to drag this thread up. But Adrian Flux sent my dad an renewal quote and in small writing it has hidden charges bumping up the price by 100+ quid to what the original quote was. He has got a better quote with swinton.

Adrian Flux havent been able to beat my Direct Line quotes. With DirectLine i qualify for:
- 10% from online bonus
- 10% from someone else at the same address having car insurance policy.

The only reason ive gone with Adrian Flux is because they arent nazis when it comes to mods and unfortunately DirectLine are.
