FAO : GX2 owners

Car  Fabia vRS
i remember a few people on here have them.

what make and model did u get, and did you do any research into it before u bought, and why did you choose that model over any other?

am thinking of getting one so i can run games at my monitors 1920x1200 native res.

I went for the XFX, but really any version is fine. Don't pay a premium for any overclocked versions. They seem to overclock easily +70Mhz on the core, so just use Coolbits if you want faster than stock speeds.

Overall, the GX2 is a monster card. I run @ 1680x1050, the GX2 doesn't give a s**t how much AA/AF you pile onto it, it just keeps pumping those frames out with one had on the wheel. For your screen I'd say the LEAST you need is a GX2 if you're going for a single card.

It would be wiser to get a single GX2, and plan a DX10 upgrade path in a few months.

Waste of time at the moment. Most tests so far have shown that 2 * GX2's don't give that much advantage over a single GX2. Ofcourse if you have money burning a hole in your pocket...

i run a 3.4ghz intel dual core with 1gb of DDR2, and a seagate 320gb 7200rpm sata2 drive with 16mb cache. might go for an extra gig of memory at the same time.

3.4ghz intel pointless with a quad sli setup anyway extremely CPU limited.

Yup, I'm slightly CPU bound (depending on the game) with a single GX2 and AM2 4600+. Pentium is going to choke to death.

Quad SLi really needs a Conroe feeding it.

mine is actually an 805D clocked to 3.4ghz with my memory running at 667mhz.

i am just looking at what i could order and i am reading some reviews and benchmarks, and how come the ati 1900's and 1950's seem to come out better than the gx2's in tests?

Cause there newer. And use better RAM have a lot of pipes there rather similar spec wise when you look at the specs. Just the GX2 has more memory which is usless currently and the 1950 uses DDR4. Hence faster.

The new 8800 could be out as soon as next month though.

Some specs for you. Looks like it will be an absolute beast.

I'll take Pepsi challenge with the X1950XTX any old day of the week. Start winding in the AA/AF at high resolutions, and the GX2 will walk away ;)

Doesnt actually mate. Not much difference plus you also have to remember the nvidia cards arent capable of doing HDR lighting with AA. ATI cards can.

i've never been an ATI man, always had nvidia's, right from the geforce 1 ultra.

before that i had 3dfx voodoo cards in sli. had both the voodoo 1's and voodoo 2's combo'd with matrox millenium or matrox mystique cards.

the thing that put me off ati's was when i once had to use them in the days of the ati rage, and the ati all in wonder, they were shockingly bad back then.

I had read this, except that HL2 Ep1 runs in HDR with AA - so I'm confused? Lost Coast also runs in HDR with AA (lots of) enabled?

Just curiosty, not arguing :)

Theres 2 methods of HDR + AA. HL2 way which works. And farcry way farcry if you try it will not allow you to use HDR and AA at the same time. Neither will Ghost recon or oblivion.

And ATI used to be shockingly bad. But since the geforce4 days they have been better cards usually. Apart from the X800 series.

Okay ta, either card seems like a good choice then really. I know the 1950 is a monster card, but I cannot help feeling that when the res gets high, and the AA/AF gets stupid, the GX2 will suffer far less. 1950 is cheaper though - good choice of card for anyone. Thing is, at the top of the game it's all splitting hairs really, and diminishing returns.

In any case, I loves the hardware and I will get whatever is the best at the time, ATI or Nvidia matters not. I'm not a brand wh0re. Probably the best value card I ever had in its day was my 9800Pro :approve:

Same here my 9800 is stil going strong had a pro but loaded an XT bios on it and an artic silencer. Now been runnign since new at stupid core clocks etc and not had a problem with it in years.

it isn't really a case of the money though, at the end of the day there isn't massive amounts of difference in cost, i just want to buy the better card.

^^Probably better off going for the cheaper 1950 in that case, especially if you intend to go DX10 asap.

I'm totally happy with my GX2, and the time I've owned it means I am getting the best out of it. I would happily change it to a DX10 card tomorrow if they offered much over it. I will probably skip G80 & R600 and change on the next cycle, when DX10 is more settled. Until then, I dont think the GX2 is going to struggle :) I've alyways got an itchy trigger finger on the credit card, so always watching the advances and always willing to consider new upgrade paths.

as i said before, this upgrade is really to take advantage of this 24" screen i got. main thing is, the card has got to be able to run games at 1920x1200.
