FAO Mechanical Genius People - CV joint Issues

Rob

I've got a knocking (more of a clicking with every wheel rotation) coming from turning hard right at speed (so the passenger wheel).

I've had it since doing the following....

The other day I noticed my CV clip had gone missing and in turn, spilt CV grease everywhere... wonderful.

I drove it for like two days like it, the joint was pretty sealed and not open, just leaking from the lack of clip.... I then totally re-greased it and put a jubilee clip on. (This is where I think I went wrong)

Since doing that, when turning hard right I'm getting this clicking.

When I fitted the jubilee clip, there was a lot of clearance from the screw (well it seemed like there was).

Is it possible the "screw" is catching on something every time it goes around?

Or

Is it possible my CV joint is knackard? (I'd be surprised, but I'd like opinions).

I can't really check if the screw is catching as I doubt I've heard it enough to have made any marks anywhere, so any suggestions/ideas are welcome.

i had the same problem after two weeks of the annoying clicking noise it turned out to be a screw in my tyre?

Did you check that the original clip was not inside the boot? Mine was lol !

I can't say I "checked" like properly, but when bunging the grease in with my fingers I'm sure I'd have noticed it??? (it wasn't in a squeezey thing so I had to sling it in by hand).

Definitely not a screw in the tyre, well I say definitely, but I'm only so sure because you can sort of feel something clicking, or catching.

When doing mine, Dad didn't feel anything until he pushed the boot right back. We just assumed it had broken and fallen off! Mine still clicks even after re-packing all the thick greasy stuff! New driveshaft time!

Jubilee clip??? That WILL catch. You would be better off using a large cable tie, or even, the proper clip.

The proper clip is pants though... there seemed plenty of room for the jubilee when still, but I'm guessing that's different under pressure???

I've seen lots of cars jubilee clipped before?

I'm sure you can't even buy the proper clip from Renault without buying a whole boot can you???

i would take the j.clip off and stick a cable tie on mate. see if that solves it plus a cable tie will be good enough anyway no real need for a jubilee..

Unless, like mine the groove has worn and thus the cable tie cant grip tight enough!

Would have to be a substantial one. they also have to be long!

If you can get that clip on by hand, you'll be the incredible hulk.

They need to be on f**king tight!

Jubilee clip works fine if positioned correctly.. Cable tie's a no go, as they'll give up easily.

Ok then genius....

How does one put a jubilee clip on "correctly"?

The end of the shaft has to rotate, so where it is make no difference.

I've always used jubilee's before on other cars, but I'm guessing that because it's so low the pressure causes it to rub??

Oh and one more thing...

If you don't put those clips on by hand, what do you use??? (I'm sure you do it up as tight as possible by hand, then crimp that little sticky up bit to make it 100% tight???)

iirc you need to use a special tool to get a original clip on properly,

Cable tie wont last,

To solve the problem you need to use a Jubilee clip, mines been well over a year and still going strong, easily enough to tightn up if grease starts to come lose

I did notice those tools Danny, but can I not just use some nail pliers which are the same, barr the middle bit to press it down? So if I just crimp it with the pliers then knock it flat?

(I'm aware I'm a pikey, but you took all my £££)

Got this on my off side driveshaft, been there before and after lowness.

Only get it on full lock though. Going to have a look at it today.

A jubilee should be fine on a 1*2, plenty of room for the screw section to rotate. Get the wheel off and have a look for any witness marks if you think it may be catching, see if it makes the noise by hand too.

I bought on of those when one broke off mine, theres no way to use a jubilee on the megane and you can get them fvcking tight with that tool! Expense aside, I gathered i'd probably use it more than once.

But is yours rather low? I think this is the only reason I'm getting a clicking or rubbing?

no mines not low but if you think about the part where the jubilee clip is on goes straight into the hub the cv joint itself does all the moving around not the bit with the clip on it only rotates.

no matter how high or low the car is rob it shouldn't foul anything unless your jubilee clip end is mahoosive?

there is only two places it would catch one is the underside of the hub itself where the suspension bolts to, or the lower wishbone in which i dont think either of them.

also check the jubilee clip where you tighten it up see if its worn.

myself i think the cv joint is shagged?

pics of the jubilee clip in position :)

I thought the jubilee looked fine, like there was a lot of room, but obviously under the pressure of cornering this isn't the case...

The noise is not even slightly there on normal driving, so the chance of being able to re-create it is less than 0 unfortunately.

I've only managed to make it do it three or four times, but I guess having a look for any marks would be a good start.

I'll try to get some pics and get the wheel off to have a look one day this week. Bloody thing.

Yours sounds more like top mounts mate.

The speed you have to go to get mine to do it, you wouldn't be doing full lock!

Definately the driveshaft after having a look before. Top mounts are tipex'd and haven't moved at all.

The offside has no pressure inside. Which makes me think there is more than likely little to no grease inside. The cable tie is no where near strong enought or tight enought. Can push it back and too but I wasn't in the position to start destroying things today and take it off. Just going to get a new one.
