Fast Driving/ ESP Question

  BMW M3
Hi there,

Ive recently read post/comments that the ESP/traction control is quite intrusive when driving fast b-roads etc... but cant really think to a moment i have thought so myself.

Ive obviously felt it work going round/coming off wet roundabouts which i was expecting but never flat out round the twisties.

So i'm wondering if i'm not driving fast enough....lol

So does switching it off really make driving more enjoyable ?

I dont think i have ever pushed the 182 beyond its limit yet (understeer/oversteer at high speed etc..) and just get the occational skipping when cornering fast.

Slightly worried that writting off my last car and nearly myself has lost me my confidence... but it doesnt feel like it.

I regularly throw mine at roundabouts or off of a 90 degree sliproad off a dual carridgeway near me at 70 and you can notice it cutting in if its left on.

dunno about no corrections, always gonna have to be careful on the go pedal, i.e. dont lift off!!!

i think it's saved me once, although never noticed any lights flashing on the dash, nearly wiped out a sheep and a lamb at 90 but managed to steer around em whilst down changing, braking and shitting myself

i wouldnt take it off tbh........
does feel weird when it corrects the car....but it does a good job of doing it.
saved me a few times in the wet when i had my old tyres on..:(

Wuss ^ lol.

Do whatever you feel comfortable with. Probably the wrong time of year to turn it off though if you are unsure.

But what if I want some lift off oversteer ;)

has saved me a number of times on wet dieselly slip roads, have been round the ring on a 9 min lap with it on for half the lap, didn't notice, to be honest i was that focused, LOL

Lifting off on roundabouts is no fun with it on, mines always off during the summer, secondary reaction like putting my seat belt on, just leave it on when its wet, or u get nowt buit wheelspin

I have felt it at 30-40 but never around the 65+ mark. So when other people say its more enjoyable switching it off on b-roads, i wondering if i'm driving too slow. Think the 182 has a skill of making you feel that you going slower then you are, by the way it handels so well.

i think the tracks the place to turn it off, too many unknowns on the roads.

i turn it off occassionally but usually have it on, i doubt it slows u down on the road.

Day to day, leave it on. Fast driving when you're aware of the risks, turn it off as it defo cuts in (light doesnt flicker). On track i would start with it off, start as you mean to go on.

get used to driving with it off, on track its the only way to get used to teh cars true limits, and when cup driving chimps say yr not a real man cos you have traction control, tell em yoiu drive with it off,LOL :)

Just worried that as ive had the car for over a year and have done fast driving on varies long distance country roads, that if i turn it off i will expect too much from the car and it wont forgive me.... and go the same way as my last car. Through a wall and into a field.

listen to fred turn it off, also remove anything of comfort, anything electric, anything safety related, make sure yr car is hoovered, to remove the 2,46 grams of dust which may be located on yr carpetless floor, LOL

Talking about squeal plates... just got a call from the garage and turns out my annoying noise is due to the fact i took the squeal plates out. lol

On road or track, I personnaly prefer to be in control, and that means brake application or throttle lifts when I want them...not when a box-of-tricks designed by some random Renault bod thinks I need them.

There's nothing worse than being on a nicely entered corner, the car takes a set as you pick up the throttle, bringing it back in as you unwind the lock with the tyres working well and slipping just a little...then the f****** useless ESP decides you're having too much fun and grabs at the wheels.

I used to turn it off all the time on my V6 Mondeo...and that's one of the reasons I bought the Cup.

Back to your original question Justin...you're not driving it hard enough fella.

Yeah... probably. I had an escort previously with no gadgets on it and now that ive got used to the 182 with the esp on, i'm worried i screw up.

I wouldnt say i dont drive it hard, but probably not to its limits as im not too sure how much further on they are.

As i said, my escort i wrote off one cold night in the middle of nowhere in the scottish borders by taking a corner too fast and ploughing through a solid stone wall, ending up complety mashed in a field. I really dont want that happening again lol... Think the odd track day might sort me out.

P.s. Is the difference between a cup and non-cup 182 big in terms of handling?

I always leave it on....not that balls-out driving the thing anyway so hardly even notice it.
