Fastchip remap wiped after Cambelt change?

  Clio 182 Sport
Hi Guys,

I have just had my Cambelt, Waterpump and Dephaser changed and noticed driving home that the car doesn't feel quite so urgent, so I tested the rev-limiter in 2nd and 3rd and it is set at 6,800rpm....

Previously the limiter was 6,800rpm in 2nd but slightly higher in 3rd, can't remember exactly but there was definately a difference, maybe 7,000rpm.

So my question is does a cambelt/dephaser change require an ECU reset which could have wiped my Fastchip map as I don't know much about how it works as it was done by the previous owner?

Many thanks in advance.

Sounds like its just not hot enough yet. The fastchip map sits at about 6800rpm until the ecu sees around 90 degrees water temp.

mine used to rev to 7200rpm standard. (may have been 100rpm more or less, but certainly over 7K.
It may be cold, i think they have a cold limiter that cuts in earlier.

It sounds like it may be timed out slightly, a common problem after cambelts are done by people who arent experienced with them.

Is there not some sort of computer that wipes maps off when it gets plugged in?

I remember someone saying something about it but i cant remember who/where

If the map was "wiped" it wouldnt run the engine anymore.

A main dealer might do an ecu update and replace the map with a new standard one, but it seems unlikely on a car of this age.

Thanks Guys, it was done by a very reputable specialist (i will refrain from naming them as I'd be very surprised if they've got the timing wrong) but I will be on the phone to them as soon as they open in the morning.

The car was up to temp as I'd driven it quite hard for around 12 miles....

I'd be surprised even if the timing was out that it would adjust the rev limiter?

Cheers

Was the temperature needle bang on the middle? When my thermostat was playing up it wasn't allowing the car to heat up properly and hence stayed on the cold rev limiter.

check the coolant level. it might be low and need topping up or There might be an airlock and the temp sensor is sat in an air pocket.

Still don't know why people mess with water pumps when they are fine

surely changing the water pump whilst doing the belts makes sense if its not been changed before? looking forward to seeing who did this belt change, im going to say ktec.

Fastchip map goes to 7200RPM, does the thermostat actually switch the map over to the regular one or is it something else?

Not really no as the water pump isn't timing belt driven on these and they can be done at any time... but that's going off topic.

Fastchip maps Ive installed have gone higher than 7200, maybe there are a few different variations though, its not really something I get involved with much, have just flashed a few on as favours for people when they havent been confident doing so themselves.

The thermostat merely controls the flow of water, but if it doesnt stay shut long enough then the water goes to the radiator too soon and hence the temperature of the water doesnt get as high, so this then causes the map not to switch over as a result.

fastchip map limiter is 7800rpm.

ive got a new thermostat and coolant temp sensor on my engine and occasionally even after 15 minutes of warming up I can still catch the lower limiter

mine goes to 7800rpm not that I see it much unless im letting it run out of a bend

Are you sure you arent misreading the rev counter if thats on a fastchip map?

The big line next to the 8000rpm on our ph2 is at 7750, the little line that looks like 8250 is the actual 8K rpm point, cause Ive set our limiter at 7850, and it looks like well over 8K to most people.

Cts, thermostat or naffed up timing. Only 3 things it could be tbh, and my money is on the timing even if they are highly regarded we are all human.

OP does the car run differently on Cold? that was the major change when going onto Fastchip maps, does it Kangaroo down the road when you start driving it?

Limiter is the same in all gears on a 182. You've just not let it warm up if you're getting the <7000 limiter.

I've driven my car for approx 15-20 minutes before and still hit the lower limiter just like Martin. Not sure if the colder weather makes any difference to that, probably a slight difference at least.

Thanks all and sorry for the delay in coming back - not had a chance to use the car until today..

So it is definately now running to beyond 7k RPM, I changed up at around 7200rpm and still didn't hit the limiter (2nd, 3rd and 4th) - so I think the thermostat is a bit random...and the car wasn't fully up to temp the other eve. Have just done 60 miles in it, when you are driving along at 30-50mph in 4th and 5th the temp sits at around a third and as soon as you start queing in traffic it goes up to half but no higher - then drops down to a thrid again as soon as you are back up to a reasonable speed.

Should the car always be at half temp, regardless of the road conditions?

Ren7oaks did the belt for me and I spoke to Shaun about it, who suggested it must be a temperature issue, rather than any chance they could have "wiped" the map as he said it's simply not possible with the machines they have. He is very competent with these cars and I am sure the timing would be spot on - can't help but feel it is a little down on power but might just be psychological or that I have got "use" to the power. I hit 130mph earlier in a mile stretch of "private" highway and I guess if the timing was out, that simply wouldn't have been possible.

The car has always "struggled" to get up to temp so I am definately not suggesting things have changed since the work that Ren7oaks have carried out (and the coolant level is fine) - very pleased with the work they've done.

Anyway, views on the operating temp would be appreciated.

Cheers

Temp should sit at halfway constantly and never move. I rekkon its new thermostat time mate, probably best change the sensor at the same time too :)
