fault with steering rack?

  iceberg 172
does anyone know if theres a problem with fluid run steering racks on 1.2 16v? car is all over the road! optoflexed it up last weekend at with out on toe so i tracked it up to -0.00 both sides, felt shite so did it again to day -0.55 n/s and 0.36 o/s. seems theres play inside the rack! still all over the road and drags when on full lock!

track rod ends could be worn check for play

I don't understand a lot of your message though anyway ie "optoflexed it up last weekend at with out on toe"

only the mk2 phase 1 have hydrolic pas otherwise its electric (bar the few early mk2 phase 2 with it)

the steering also cracks loudly when locking over each way! sure ive heard somewhere that the rack shatters inside and has to be replaced! i changed wishbones, antiroll link bars and track rod ends a few month back too!

Is the play definatly inside the rack? Move the steering left to right while car is on the on ground and get someone to see if the whole rack is moving. I had a problem with the rack mount bolts on the subframe not being tight enough.

My steering column has play in it, can lift it up and side to side by about a inch, really don't need to be a mechanic. Seems to be a common fault, but don't know if there is a cheap fix was quoted £164 by renault to look at it, but apparently it could be just a top bearing or a ball and socket joint, tbh I don't really know.
