Finally got a mac, now i need help getting online..

  none, just walk
ive just got a macbook and i love it, but the only problem is i need a new modem to get online. I currently have a usb speedtouch modem with tiscalli broadband for my pc. Ive tried downloading the drivers for the modem on the mac and Ive found out i cant use the usb modem on my mac?! it says it doesnt run on intel based mac's?

so i phoned up tiscali and they said i need a ethernet modem cos the usb one wont work and ive got to go and buy a modem elsewhere cos they cant give me a one that will work?

does this sound right?

so where can i get a cheap ethernet modem, and is that all i need?

Does the mac have built in wifi? If so just get a wireless router.

Probably.
Get an Wireless ADSL router.. something like a Netgear DG834G with wireless. You can still plug in using CAT5, but.. seeing as you have a Macbook, wireless would be the way IMO.

Set it up using your Tiscali details, and connect your Macbook via wireless then have fun walking around the house etc.. :)

I had to junk my Speedtouch Modem a while ago for the same reason as they never do drivers new enough for the most recent OS, went for a Netgear router here.

yeah its got wifi, how does the wifi router's work? i dont have a pc to plug it into to setup the internet connection cos its going the journey tomorrow. So all i have is the macbook and a telephone point. Do i connect it to the macbook wirelessly and then connect it to tiscali?

That's fine. Plug the laptop into the router via CAT5 (you'll get a cable), goto the router's config pages http://192.168.1.1 if you get the Netgear, go through the setup.. and done!

Remember to secure the wireless tho using WPA and giving it a password :)

netgear is 192.168.0.1 username admin password is password, if you interested i have a couple of top end wireless routers that are tested with my imac :)

Ah, so it is.. 192.168.0.1.

192.168.1.1 was the Cisco ASA (management port) I was configuring the other day!

  A blue one.
It's a Mac, surely 'It just works'. Like it did on Windows.

This particular modem was crap under windows too, just like the thomson/alcatel support.

You couldn't install updated drivers unless you had the cd to "verify" you had the modem, which put you s**t out of luck if you'd lost it and wanted to download new ones!

Barring "bizarre" devices, most things you plug into a usb port on a mac will just work. Apple actually got CDC drivers correct unlike Microsoft....

im going mad now!

ive bought a zoom asdl wireless modem for bt line from currys.

ive installed the software, joined it to my mac by ethernet, plugged the modem to my phone socket with the asdl connector, and connected that to the back of the modem. Ive got the power, the ethernet, wlan, and dsl all showing solid green lights but the internet is showing a red light?! ive called up tiscali and the indian call center didnt have a clue what i was asking them. I was basically asking them what to do cos the modem is fully installed but not connecting to the internet. I dont have a tiscali installer disk for the mac cos the one i do have is just for the pc and the usb modem them have provided. They started giving me all these ip address codes? ive not got a clue what to do with them cos im totally new to whole mac lark?!

ive been on the zoom website and they cant help, its like im totally stuck- i have a mac, internet connection, a modem, and non of them work with each other.

Any ideas? it says on the box of the modem it works with mac, on the network settings it says its connected but its not bringing any pages up? i have full wireless signal using the zoom settings.

Im really at my wits end here.

ive took the modem back so now im on the lookout for a modem wireless or ethernet that will wlrkt with a macbook and tiscali broadband.

If the internet light was red, it's because you didn't put in your Tiscali username and password probably.. you would need to do that on any router.

Any ADSL Wireless router will work with a Macbook and Tiscali ADSL..

no i did, i went onto the basic setup page for the router using the disk that was supplied with the modem. I used auto detect on my settings and at first there was no light on the internet section of the modem, then when i entered in my username and password it changed to red. I phoned up tiscali and they said its showing its workin on their end. Then i phoned up zoom and they said its the isp's fault so i tried everything pppoa settings as advised by tiscali, then pppoe settings and it still didnt work. In the shop they said it could of been the wire or the modem that was at fault then if thats the case?

Seems odd. If it was the wire then normally the DSL sync light wouldn't have been on.

Anyway, like I said, Netgear DG834G :p
