First attempt at "panning" @ Snetterton

  GSXR + KDX220
Firstly its my first DSLR so Im a complete beginner at this......
Been down Snetterton circuit for a few hours over the weekend taking hundreds of pictures, ALOT of which were rubbish and out of focus

But, I nailed a few good ones (IMO) but nowhere near perfect. Basically some constuctive criticism would be great ;)

All were shot hand-held with no tri/monopods using an 1100D and a Sigma 70-300mm APO DG lense. Im still on a budget at the moment so please dont yell at me saying I need a faster lense etc :approve: which costs £XXX

I also had a bit of trouble getting the exposure settings right due to the immense brightness of snow everywhere :S

  Merc A class
Not a bad effort mate, and that lens can produce some great images i use it for my shots.

Have you got any links to them? Wouldnt mind seeing some for inspiration :) What camera do you use?

Superb for a first effort. The White lotus at the end is my favourite.

I would work on getting the car central in the frame or at least leave some space in front for it to 'drive into'.

The colours are also a little dull and flat. Nothing 5 seconds of photoshop can't fix.

I also find that generally (but not always) when panning cars they are more photogenic if you either get them exactly side on or you get them so you can just see the front of the car (like your Mini photo).

Good effort getting out in that weather, it can't of been nice.

Thanks for the comments guys :)

dunganick, what do you think makes the colours a bit dull? I'd like to get them looking as good as possible straight off the camera. I'm shooting in RAW, could that be a factor?
The lotus one is definately the best looking, probably the only one that's perfectly side on!

Next time I head down there, I'll let you know mate. Think a few of the east Anglia guys are doing the 26th ish? Were you down there this weekend too?

I think a few are just slightly under exposed. It's mainly the wide shots or shots with lots of snow in them, so i suspect the amount of white in the frame fooled the camera into thinking it was brighter than it was.

Shooting RAW just gives you more room to adjust the colours of the image in post production.

Did you do any editing on the images or are this as they were taken on the camera?

I only edited the red fiesta, the yellow Mk2 escort and the mini. Only a small amount to brighten the colour a little, and just to experiment really.

Don't think the bright snow helped. I've only just this minute found the menu to change the saturation and contrast settings in the camera so will have another go with it slightly higher :)

Very good shots. If you hadn't have said it was your first attempt, I never would have guessed.

I was expecting these to be a lot worse than they are, from the title of the thread. Some pretty good shots there, from a 'technique' point of view. As others have pointed out, better understanding of the metering and camera settings would of improved them a fair bit, as would some post production work in photoshop. The position you chose to take the shots from is vital as well to avoid distracting forground or background objects. Not bad at all for a first effort.

First effort? I'd be chuffed with that. Some of them are better than I can achieve, and I've been trying long enough.

Thanks guys, the comments are very encouraging ;)

I've not really read up on the metering aspect but found I can change a few things on the camera....anyone care to give me a quick run down?

The thing with snetterton, is that a lot of spectator areas are raised to give a good view, I imagine a perfect side on view at track level would be better.
