First car? Can't decide!

Firstly hello, I am new

I can start driving next month and went to a Renault dealership today to look at potential first cars. It has come down to the VW Polo and a Renault Clio.

Anyway, I was intrigued when the guy pointed out Clio S in red with white alloys, mirrors, spoiler and decals. At first I thought it looked tacky but I can't make up my mind. The engine is a 1.5 diesel as far as I know and I was just wondering what it would be like as a first car.

Get a GT mate comes with the sports seats and nice spoiler and body kit and it has the 1.5 DCI engine 106 bhp and and probably similar money to buy

personal prefference, but you will probably want a more powerful car in a couple of years time so why not get a 2nd hand older one a lot cheaper?

I know i certainly haven't got the money for a new car AND to be able to pay for insurance

1.5 Diesel is a great engine in my opinion.

My suggestion would be to check insurance on the cars you are looking at before setting your heart on anything.

Agree.
Get a cheap Mk2 1.2 or a 1.5 65 DCi, save your money for something decent until the insurance goes down.

But if you're set between the two, Id choose the Polo (If its the newer one) over that Clio, not all that keen on the white decals does look a bit tacky.

I think the S is more around the spec I am looking for and it is an ex demo with only 17k miles for £8995.

My dad refuses to buy anything that isn't nearly new so this is as old as I can go I'm afraid :dapprove:

Dont get me wrong, I love the mk2 and I know I could get a decent one but my dad's very picky and won't buy from anywhere but a dealer i'll definitely branch out more when I buy my own car.

We test drove the Polo and it did feel nice, although all the reviews say it's slow and overpriced? It was a Polo Moda 1.2 60

Just looked up the moda and tbh looks like a slow car (but saying that first cars are mean't to be slow... until your a MORE experienced driver) you tried looking at the 1.2 Tdi (75hp and slightly quicker for similar money)

IMO spending nearly 9k on a first car is insane, first cars are to get all your newbie mistakes and bumps out of the way, most people wreck their first cars. BTW i don't nessicarily mean smash them up, but general bumps, dents scratches ect

The TDi boosts my insurance way up :/ it's between the SE and Moda. Moda lacks air con but I'm not too bothered as it includes MP3/USB, tinted windows, nicer alloys and fog lamps.

Clio mk2 dci, dont get something new, you're probably bound to have a few bumps and scrapes whilst you're learning the ropes

Brand new first car is a bad idea. I'm going to assume you are 17 or 18. It's extremely likely that you will crash/prang/scrape/curb/poorly-maintain your first car as you start you actually 'learn' how to drive on the roads on your own. Unless daddy is picking up the bills I'd be looking for something ~£1000 with a good service history, tax and an MOT.

Since you have the money (im assuming) for a new car + insurance... i'd recommend getting a mk2 ph2 1.5 Dci 100... mouthfull i know... just remember DCI 100.

for the price of that new one i bet youd be able to buy a dci 100 and insure it with money left over.

its also the best of the non sport clios

Thanks for all your responses but I stress that this is not my decision, if it were mine then I would buy an older car for sure. I do think it's unnecessary spending £8k+ on a first car but that's just how it has worked out.

Also I have done insurance quotes (full license) and 1/2 year old cars come out the cheapest.

Don't know why everyone's having a go at the guy for spending 'too much' on a first car.
He has clearly said that his dad won't buy anything second hand and fair play to him, if my dad was offering me a brand new car I wouldn't say no and get an old one!

Surely as your first car, you should be looking at running costs over most other factors?
Have a look at a new Fiat Panda. Absolutely brilliant car, European Car of the Year (may have been the previous model but it's the same formula), no major reported faults with the outgoing model, road tax is free on some models and they are pretty much the cheapest car going that you can run day to day (insurance group 2).
They are also great fun to drive and have a cool/quirky image.

I like both the Clio and Polo.
Id go for a VW if they have sorted out the dodgy door electrics from previous models.
But Clio dci will be good on fuel and have torque for easy driving.

Option 3? Fiesta 1.4 TDCI ?

Get real everyone...his dad's offering to buy him a brand new car. He's in the market for a NEW car, suggesting MK2 DCi's is pointless.
