First Car

  BMW E46 330i Touring
I thought that the policy holder didn't NECESSARILY have to be the registered keeper of the car if the policy holder was genuinely the main driver. IE Dad buys son a new car, registers it in Dad's name just to keep son on a bit of a leash but insurance is in son's name because he drives it all the time. In this case it would be fraudulant if the dad was the policy holder but it was effectively the son's car, albeit with the dad's name on the log book....

That make sense?

Yeah the policy holder MUST be the legal vehicle owner
my ford ka is in my dad's name for insurance and im a frequent driver, however..the name on the log book is my dads too, so i should be alright! (bar the fact the reg spells my name...lol)

Dude you are so lucky (or insane) having an RS Clio as your first car. I won't get into the whole patronising thing, suffice to say please please dont get too confident too quickly. And dont pay too much attention to any comments about the lack of ABS or ESP either, just learn the car slowly but surely.

Can you touch up the paint??. (as it's got a few stone chips).. Can i purchase some touch paint online??

I'm sure you can get touch up paint but the best place might be Renualt. I made the foolish mistake of trying Halfords for an Inferno touch up kit, and I'm sure Mondial is just as 'specialist'

...and the wheels have been curbed in a few places... Would you recommend me getting them refurbed or buying new ones??!?

Depending on condition I guess. Dont leave them mashed up though in my opinion. Grubby chewed up alloys make a car look rough as old boots, and totally uncared for. I would probably get a set of Trophy anthracite Turunis, but they wont be cheap and I dont know if the offset will be correct for 172Cup hubs.

About time the they changed the law for first time drivers Ii reckon.
While in the 2 year probation period you should be limited to 1 ltr and no more than 45bhp ;)

Also will look strange if the "Named" drivers car is owned by the "named" driver on the log sheet?

£3k insurance is there for a reason, a new qualified driver is hardly in a postion to be able to drive a 172bhp FWD hatch well is he?

Sorry for the rant.....buts thats the way I see it? ;)

I tend to agree with that, but ultimately, while new drivers are able to buy and drive these cars legally, I guess all we can do is hope they are sensible enough not to bin it and hurt themselves or others. The danger with a car like an RS Clio, is that it's so easy to drive fast. I'd imagine its a car that will easily make a new driver feel like Ayrton Senna all too quickly - until they're hanging from their seatbelt looking at the horizon upside down.

But, we only learn the hard way. I know I did but I was only looking at my upisde down Mini in a field, not an RS Cup :D

The biggest potential worry in this case is that the insurance company will take the preimiums no questions asked, but they WILL send Sherlock round to investigate a claim involving the named driver.
