Fitting 6x9 inside the rear side panels

I finally got my brand new, shiny Clio from the car dealer last Wednesday. I already changed the pre-fitted wheels to 15" alloys.

Im not a HiFi enhustiast, but of course I just had to fit in new MP3/CD-player, mid woofers and tweeters this weekend (because no audio was included in the deal). Removing the dashboard was a real pain! It took me and my friend somewhat five hours... but thanks to the advice given in this Board, we managed to do it. You rule, guys!! :)

Im not going to fit in any amps or subs, at least not yet. Mostly because I think the trunks handy for loading stuff when needed, not stuffing in audio equipment... uhm. But anyway, the tweeters sound quite loud now. The head units got MP3 but no real EQ. I think putting 6x9 in the back might result in a good chance of fading the balance from the front a bit?

Or do you think it might be too loud because I used Renaults original install audio cabling without any custom crossovers? I guess theres gotta be some kind of a crossover somewhere inside the car along the way, because only one cable per front speaker comes through to the ISO connector?

And, a few questions:

A) Is there any wiring going to the rear quarter panels - I presume the term refers to those small quadrate areas on each side of the parcel shelf?

I already saw some threads about how to get to them... but of course, if someone can give clear instructions (preferably with pictures), it would be very nice...

B) will 6x9s fit inside those rear panels, without modifications?

There was wiring in mine, but maybe you wont have any there cause you didnt get speakers with your car.

Being honest Ive replaced all the speakers in my car, except the tweaters and they really do suck. If i could be arsed taking the dash off I would bin them asap. They are sh!t.

6x9s wont fit in the rear panels, not a chance. Just stick them on the parcel shelf.

Thanks for the information. I think Ill stick to my "backup plan" then, which is basically a pair of 5.25" coaxials in the side panels of rear seats. Of course stealth shelves would be nice, but I just dont know where to get them from around here in Finland...

But uhm... if 6x9s wont fit... what size would fit - 4 inches and up?

Yes, that http://www.caraudiodirect.co.ukwww.caraudiodirect.co.uk site is excatly where I first looked for advice. And I had no problems with fitting the 5.25" to the front doors - the car salesman even showed me where to find the wires in the front doors (even if no audio is fitted in the factory, the wires are still there). So of course I just cut the adapters off from the end of factory fitted wires and then wrapped them together with the wires that came with the speakers.

And for the tweater holes, itd actually been easiest (though brute) way just to break the plastic covers that protect the holes, because the holes were empty in the inside.

But it seems I now have a problem. Because the 6x9 really wouldnt fit, today I went to see 4x6" coaxials for those side supports in the rear shelf. Finally I ended up buying 5.25" Pioneers (model TS-1329) for somewhat really cheap from a clearance discount. They are originally custom fit for Clio mk1 front doors, but because the + and - are clearly marked, naturally I can easily connect them with regular wires.

I presume the original factory wiring for 6 speakers includes 2x front and 2x back door slots plus the 2x for tweaters, which means that the rear shelf is not pre-wired?

So, can anybody tell me, where to look for those wires nearby the rear door speaker holes? I got so fed up with the dash removal project that I really wouldnt like to tear all the mouldings off from the back of the car...

im wondering if you have actually looked at your car mate.

the factory wiring is 2 wires for the front, there is a crossover somewhere that goes to the tweaters. then 2 wires that go to the rear speakers. if you want 6x9s in your parcel shelf just extend the wire from the rear panels into the boot. there is lots of space to do it, no cutting needed. easy mate!

Yes yes, I definetely agree to what youre talking about. So, I already have a 5.25" component system fitted to the front side, and already figured out that the woofers and tweeters in the front are connected by the same wires by simply fading the sound from front to the rear (resulting in silence when I turn the knob towards the rear).

So the only question is, WHERE actually those rear wires are to be found from - I know they must be somewhere nearby the 5.25" speaker holes?

And oh, Im not that interested about those 6x9, or 4x6 anymore now that I have those extra 5.25" coaxials. So, I know the place where to fit em, but I cant find the wires!

The wires are definetely there, and accessible even in my car, because that way its much cheaper for the resellers to install the Renaults own Radiosat system later without tearing down the moldings. Makes sense, doesnt it?

hmm, have u tried looking in the empty speaker hole with a torch? only other way is pulling out your head unit and following the speaker wire.

Can i ask how you came by a clio with no audio

You could always bite the bullet and just install new wires. installing to the rear of the car isnt hard. just take out the wiring at your head unit. then stick in the new one and feed it from front to back. youll find plenty of places to hide the cable. just a thought if you cant find the orginal wire

Yes - the reason is 730 EUR, which is the price for Radiosat around here. I think thats just way too much for a CD player and 6 adequate speakers.

So far Ive paid 250 EUR for the HU (JVC KD-LH7R, which has MP3 but rather poor EQ), 95 EUR for the component speakers (SPL Dynamics PRO-5.2A) and 20 EUR for the coaxials (Pioneer TS-1329) PLUS of course the few hundred EUR minus for car value degrade, for tearing down the dash etc.

But I must say, fitting these things in is also FUN - and thats PRICELESS.

the harsh reality of work eh. I start uni next week so im being a bum for a while!

Ive just made a descion to lower my clio 60mm so I better go get some cash eh!

Too bad I eventually didnt have time yesterday to dig into it...

I was also thinking about fitting better suspension or shock absorbers, because the new wheels make the car a bit shaky feeling at lower speeds. But as always, money is the issue... :) But maybe til next summer Ill do it.

Dammit!

I tried to find the wires using a mirror and a flashlight. I found a million wires going to the back of the car, but no audio wires. Nope!

Seems like I have to take out the back panels and the rear seats... and for doing that, I really believe... uhm, hope the wires actually ARE there. Luckily there are plenty of instructions on this Board for doing this. Search button rules!

But while Im doing that, would it be a good idea at the same time to put something there to cover the metal? I dont mean only for noise protection, but for rust protection. Hmm....

if ur taking ur car to bits, i suggest just laying new wiring and sound deadinging. i would defo do that if i could be assed.

Yeh... Im also beginning to think that maybe its not such a good idea to tear the car apart for just fitting a few cheap speakers.

But doh! I just checked the price for Renaults 4x22W radio with CD and 6 speakers from http://www.renault.co.ukwww.renault.co.uk - £100. Thats about 159 €.

Imagine paying 4,6 times that to get the same set... sheesh... youre lucky guys. :I

Huh, now Ive finally Been there and Done that. I took down the side panels and completely remoted the rear seats. But did not find any needed wires... Interesting, because they are there in the HUs end.

But compared to the dash removal, this was MUCH easier. The operation took somewhat and hour and a half altogether. And the sights inside were very interesting, though. Lots of metal that can eventually turn brown... :/

So, I decided to do the "surface install" for the speakers. But where should I draw from the wires in the front side (from where in the dash would it be the easiest/best)?

And the next time someone changes the original factory installed speakers, please can you see where the wires are drawn from, and which colour they are... the same that leaves from the HU?

I finally got the rear wires installed. I cut the original from the head units end and connected my own.

In overall, it all sounds very decent now. Surprisingly full in bass, though there are no subs or amps. Of course, it might sound even better then...

But now I really wish the HU had a better EQ. The tweeters still play distractingly loud sometimes. Maybe using the cars own crossover really isnt the smartest solution...

Well, I can live with this for a while. :)

Are you chuffed with the final sound?

Ive fitted a pioneer 7400mp hu, 13cm Pioneer emotions in the front and MB Quart 6x9s (best 6x9s for 80 quid going, amazing) in the parcel shelf. Sounds very clear and suprisingly bassy. Ill prob amp the 4 speakers eventually just to make it crystal clear and increase potential volume.

Ill also eventually get a stealth shelf, its sounding alright just now.However a stealth shelf would make a big difference.

Anyway im glad you finally got your car sorted, and good luck with the rest of your "renault tuning" :)
