Flashing EML light, occasional misfire, suggestions needed!!

Another problem! third this week.

I've got a flashing eml light, the one below the cruise control light.

It's only does it occasionally, mainly when on idle but also sometimes does it when driving along, could be at any speed. Usually stays on for about 30 seconds before going off.

New coil pack yesterday has done nothing. Cleaned plugs (new 10k ago), leads are fairly new. TB cleaned.

Does it still with standard map on or 98 map. Does it with or without cat. Economy seems to be normal.

No fault code on rstuner as I expected with this light.

What have ya got? enlighten me :)

Mine was misfiring (or atleast I thought it was, turns out it was massively overfuelling) - turned out to be the MAP sensor (top left of inlet manifold)

Disconnect it and see if it sorts itself out, mine ran OK without it being plugged in (leaving the sensor in the manifold)

At the weekend I cleaned the crank sensor to no avail. Took the map sensor out and it was still spluttering all over the place

Here's a little video of what going on. I checked the injectors and got this

Help me fix this, it's horrendous to drive below 2500. One of you knowledgeable chaps on here is bound to be able to help. What ever tests you want me to carry out I will happily do, video the results and post back. As long as it doesn't involve spending money (unless I have to)

the injectors look ok on that video, i would still check the resistance on them though.

set your multimeter to 20 ohms. They should be about 14ish.

Did you plug the hole/just unplug the map sensor?

If you take the part off, you will need to plug the hole to keep pressure in the Inlet.

Cant get sound at work so can't watch the videos to tell if it is doing what mine was!

I'll check the injector resistance.

Unplugged it. Sensor was brand new last year. From what I can see it isn't injectors, map sensor or crank sensor

You should definitely get a code with the RSTuner if the EML light is on. I found with my cheapy special I had to check for codes without turning the engine off as the light would extinguish then wouldnt detect. but the RST should be more advanced i would think.

Thats really weird! Id expect to see a missfire Cyl x for example. the only code there which is management related is the rear o2 which shouldnt matter. again shouldnt matter but did you read DTCs while the EML was flashing/on?

took the plugs out. plug closest to the cambelt is sooty black. Changed plugs and it's still missing.

I didn't take the DTC's when the light was flashing but have previously and there was nothing extra.

Coil pack is brand new

missfire on cyl4 then, probably overfuelling by your description, did you check the resistance of the injectors as advised, particularly 4 i had also a sooty plug on 4, needed new injector.

All I know is a flashing EML means what ever the car is doing it is more than likely damaging the CAT. Does it smell a bit lean ?

No cat so not worries there.

Here are the plugs from earlier. They aren't in order but the black one is from number 4 (next to cambelt) I notice 1 of them is a touch lean, this one is from the inlet side so I would expect this a touch. Other 2 are somewhere in the middle.

Unfortunately it turns out we don't have an electric multimeter so this will have to do. Below is one with the 2 prongs together and 1 attached to an injector. ALL injectors measured the same (pretty much no resistance) If I can find an electric meter I will try this but this wouldn't be for a few days.

Tonight I am going to try some other leads to see if one of them is dead. I'll report back later when I'm home.

Tried the leads and there was no change. between sets. They rules them out then :)

I'm completely down on a cylinder now if not more than 1. Was fine again and then completely went. Sounds like a lawnmower on steroids and has NO power. Chocking its self. I'm not getting any exhaust pops. I've run the car and unplugged each injector 1 by one. The 2 closest to the cambelt made the revs drop the most. They other 2 had minimal effect. Is this a clue to anyone?

I'm trying to get hold of a multi meter which reads 20 ohms.

Just noticed you have champion plugs.

Never heard bad things about them only super 4s but everyone recommends specifically sticking to NGKs..

Also check the MAP sensor value when the ignitions on, see if its reading roughly atmospheric.

Champion plugs are the best quality plugs I have ever come across and I believe they are the official renault manufacturer. Currently ngk's are in though and it farting everywhere.

Car is currently stuck at my girlfriends so I'll get it back on rs tuner on Sunday as I need it fixed and ready to go abroad by friday

Pretty sure ngk's are standard but fair doos!

Sorry im kinda runnin out of ideas if you were near me id come have a gander you can always use spare parts too then helps massively lol

sounds like you have the same problem as me mate!.ive just changed the coil pack and still the same, also checked the plugs and the 4th one is same as yours all sooty!.You think it could be an injector or lamba sensor?

The misfire got really bad at the weekend. Rs tuner has finally logged a fault with the eml light on constantly. Injector number 4 fault and open circuit. This ties in with the sooty plug on cylinder 4. Ordered an injector so will wait and see.

Just to give a final update. it's MENDED!

Injector 4 was the problem.

My experience has been that the car does not log any codes whilst the eml is flashing. I have had to wait for the problem to develop to a full blown injector death making the EML light stay on solidly. This is when the car logs the codes.

I didn't want to spend any money until I definitely knew what the problem was so tried all options until there were only a couple of things left. Lead eliminated by swapping with a friend, had a change with my old plugs, unplugged sensors to make the car run on closed loop. (apart from the coilpack bought in MOT panic mode)

Started out with a misfire under load and ended up running very roughly. Sounds like an SV650 if it's on 3 cylinders.

Fault logged was as above "Injector 4 fault" and "Injector 4 open circuit." This was confirmed by running the car, unplugging each injector 1 by 1 and seeing which affect the engine speed the most. My injector 4 made no difference. Having carried this test out during the early misfire it was not so conclusive.

1 new injector later for £16, fitted in what takes 10 minutes max and she runs just like she used to, lovely! Warning, when you unclip the fuel rail be prepared for fuel to be your new shower.

Thanks for your help everyone :)

Started the 182 again today after not running it since it was mended. Lawn mower again :( I got a video of the injector checking for peoples ref. This time it's injector 3. Fantastic! Tempted to repalce the remaining 2 to even them all out.

Please ignore the waterpump noise
