foglights in a car with no foglights

  MK3 GTI golf 16v
how much of a pain would it be to wire in some foglights to my car ? and how exactly would i turn them on/off etc ?

if anyone else has done this if they could explain how that would be good, cheers

I done this to my Campus, basically put the fogs in, wired them to the batteries (and put fuses in).
Then fed a wire through the dash and cut a switch in beside the headlight adjusters.

If you plan on buying the stalks though, could be a bit of hassle, but I can't say.

Why do you want them out of interest?

Cos it looks good, innit? Hopefully not... but I can't see any other reason why.

I sincerely hope that one day, all the c-units in the country who think it's cool to use their fogs all the time will all drive on the exact same stretch of road at the same time, dazzle each other, and die in a pile-up only involving themselves. It's such a ridiculous and fcuking annoying habit to get into.

Fogs are great. Especially when in Selective Yellow.

But I do agree that that they gat far too much innapropriate use.

If you want to wire them to anything, wire them into the full beams, if you can use full beams safely, then you can use the fogs too

Oaft!
Some amount of hate for foglights!
I put mine in so I could use them in the fog, that and it wasn't that much hassle to wire them up. (plus a selling point)

They don't aid your visibilty in the fog though, so whats the point? They just allow other people to see you better...

I hate fog lights.

Just screams, "LOOK AT ME, LOOK AT ME, LOOK AT MY SICK RIDE, LOOK AT ME NOW. DO IT NOW"

They get a long full beam flash from me, don't see many of them at this time of the year thankfully as I rarely drive late at night

I presume, OP, you've not driven much when it's foggy in a car with front fog lights ?!

They are utterly useless for seeing anything, infact just hinder your ability to see a damn thing due to the reflection, and dazzle oncoming drivers too.

Don't waste your time/ money.

FAIL. If you use Full Beam in the fog then you'll make things worse. It'll reflect back at you and 'blind' you. The reason why fog lights are where they are and angled the way they are is to avoid the reflecting back and allow you to see road markings + the side of the road.

I can only remember 1 time in the last 5 years that I've actually needed to use fog lights.

I am well aware of this, it wasn't what I was suggesting. UFAIL.

Mostly, fogs are used by 'tards that want to look well cool though, irrespective of the weather. To get around the problem of using them inappropriately, if the fog is wired into main beams then if the road is clear ahead and you can use beams, then you can also use fogs as there's no-one to dazzle. Otherwise, you're stuck with dipped beams.

Fogs do make a mild difference in fog, but nothing great. I have noticed a positive difference applying the selective yellow film to the lens. Much less glare.

Don't get the hate for foglights :dapprove: I use mine at night to light the dark bit in-between my car and where my headlights hit, makes everything seem brighter and helps me see potholes and the like... Hard suspension FTL

I get what Knuckles means, but the way he says it will lead to flame.

I doubt it's a problem with not looking far enoguh down the road, just a problem with spotting holes in the ground until their fully illuminated

By the time the light illuminates the hole, you see it, process it and react to it, you'll have hit the hole and be 50ft down the road. They're a waste of time. Nothing more than something to show you don't own an entry level model.

That's my view anyway.

Im not on about 'proper' pot holes, just little dents/ bits of ripped up tarmac that are just an annoyance... I'm saying rather than have a bit of dark between the car and lit path, I like to use the fogs to fill that gap in... I could not do it, I just like to see all the way to the end of the light beam if that makes sense...

THIS.... My wife even had them fitted as an option on her last car purely for this reason. I think she used them twice in the two years she had it.

They are only fitted for two reason's to make the car look like a higher spec model and so that other people can see you better in the fog. There is a third reason but that's why people get upset when you ask about fitting fog lights........

Fog lamps are classed as driving lamps so you can put them on with your sidelights and your not breaking any laws... And you wont dazzle anyone. Tbh I get why people care they dont dazzle me, Id rather fogs and dip shining at me than main beam!

Foglights do dazzle. It also makes it harder to judge how far away that car is.

Essentially, using them unless it's actually foggy singles you out as a bellend. You don't look cool, other people certainly won't think you look cool, and you gain no benefit from it, other than looking like a bellend, and alerting everyone else to the fact that you are indeed a bellend.

Their not meant to be on unless there is very low visibility in FOG, hence their name. Even in fog I found they never actually help anyway.

Id indeed still rather someone have them on though than some c**t in an audi with the LED strip running along the front and back blinding me.

i dont intend on using them all the time, i also hate people who do that. seen as how i also have a motorbike these people blind me all the time.
the reason i was asking is because the car/bumper looks odd without them in. so dont jump to conclusions.

just glue a couple of round bike-reflectors to the grilles and you've got "the look" but without the lights

;)

Never have fogs dazzled me, but they do look stupid when used with just sidelights in the pitch black.

That's mainly the point in lights, so other people can see you, not just so you can see.

Well when I had the sport bumper fitted there were two gaping holes.

And as for the "just don't wire them up" comments, I'm sure when I sell my car and I say "Oh yeah I didn't wire them up cause they are not needed" will go down well. As opposed to having them wired.
In my eyes of course!

I wired some into my ph1 in exactly the same way Plummer did. Worked a treat.

Why did I do it? Because the mk2 ph1 front end looks a shed load better with them in, and it was annoying to have them there not working.

Foglight w*****s can get the f**k out. They are not DRIVING LAMPS and you can't have them on all the time by law. Plenty of nob ends will continue to do this "cos it looks good bruv, init"

I like how some of you have said you do it because it increases visibility, well so does having the full beam on too so do you do that as well?

It's chavvy and inconsiderate.

IMO ;)
