Any ideas where it's from?

If it's sheared at one end check your fuel rail guard isn't loose looks similar to one with the bolt head sheared off

Too short for fuel rail crash guard. Looks more like an upper timing belt cover stud... one of the two with 16mm nuts on them or somehting off the front of the block.

Well, I found the answer.

The replacement gearbox had this stud in it when it turned up. We were using the undertray as a bolt pot, it must just have been left in there.

I just found the stud I thought this was, so I'm still none the wiser.

Any other suggestions?

Mick, do you have a photo of the bolts you were describing?

Looks like the upper timing cover studs, as you can see near the bottom of this pic

yeah, pretty sure the oil seal plug was torqued to 100Nm rather than just the center bolt. 5 out of 6 of the long bolts through the pulley sheared clean off

It isn't from the gearbox, and I've just checked the cambelt cover and both nuts are there.

Nothing is loose, and I've found the source of my creaking - it's a mystery :p
