I use ZoneMinder to monitor my car via a wireless camera + capture card, but you can also use USB and IP camera's.
Has built in motion detection and a web frontend so you can access it from anywhere in the world if its an internet enabled PC.

The daemon is Linux by the looks of things.. The screenshots are just viewing it from a Windows browser
