Fuel starvation on wide bends



Car has a Walbro fitted, apart from the annoying noise and the fact you have to turn the key 2/3 times to get it to prime, I'm now getting spluttering/ starvation on sharp/sweeping bends.

This is more suspect when the fuel is less than 1/2 a tank (I never run it on the red etc).


Any ideas? I didn't fit the pump btw came like it with a ghey FPR.

Is this on a 172? (not sure if the 182 is the same) If so I had the same problem and it’s because of the saddle-bag style fuel tanks, I had to fit a swirl-poy and extra fuel-pump.

Swirl pot in ours and its fine down to a few litres. Had issues at Mallory before with any less than 1/2 tank

Ha ha, yes "swirl-pot" wrote that too quickly!! Anyway, I believe the fuel pick-up is on the right-hand side of the tank/s so when the car goes around a long right-hander the fuel all sloshes to the left and you get starvation until the car straightens itself. The spare wheel-well in a 172 is a nice tidy place to put the swirl-pot and bits. You will use the standard pump in the main tank to feed the SP, then an auxiliary pump to feed a fuel pressure regulator which will send the correct pressure of fuel to the fuel-rail and send the extra pressure back to the main tank. I think the 172 regulator is built into the standard fuel-rail and can be used but it would mean two fuel lines - one to the rail/regulator and then one back to the main tank. Its better/safer/easier to have the regulator near the swirl-pot and main tank, i.e. in the wheel-well and then run just the one line to the fuel-rail. Hope that made sense. If you are considering this then its also worth building a fire-wall over the wheel-well - you would need to do this if you were racing the car anyway.

Yes just like that. You're running the two fuel lines to and from the standard regulator/rail, if you were to fit an adjustable regulator in the wheel-well you would only need to run one line to the rail.

Yes I am aware of that..

We were running stock rail then yes.

Now we have different rail and reg but still using 2 lines as it was easier to install it to what was there. One day i'll go down to 1 line and put the reg in the wheel well. for now it works so it stays, more important things to do like drive it
 
Yep running a 172 Cup.

It's quite annoying because I'm getting these issues on the road (spirited driving).

The car is going to the Nurburgring in August, so it really can't be doing this!

Does anyone have any idea why this would be running a Walbro pump? Engine spec I have found:

3 Angle valve seats
Piper retainers and springs
CatCams
Matched inlets
Throttle body matched and polished
FSE pressure regulator
MK1 fuel rail
Walbro fuel pump
MK1 sender unit
Remapped at Falkland Performance Centre to match above


Would I benefit from putting back in the standard fuel system?


If not I may have no choice but to go swirl pot but surely they didn't do this in standard form?

You shouldn't have any issue on the road with starvation unless you're driving like a massive tool. Not saying you are btw, I just think it's more likely the pumps failing IMO
