speaking to a friend last night who works for microsoft, he said that within the next year you will be able to pay for and download FULL games from xbox marketplace!

Discuss :)

Prob be alot cheaper because of the fact that no packaging and printing will be involved in the process, thats my job out the window then.

lol, yeah i reckon it'll be really cheap. well certainly cheaper than one from a shop due to no packaging or manafacturing etc.

he also said that ms are still making at least a £200 loss on each unit sold, purely so they can break through into the market! scary stuff!

very good point Ollie but remember europe still dosnt have designated servers so if we get what the US gets we will be fine with everything on Live

If anything it should be slightly cheaper, what with not having the middle man or having to pay for all the physical jazz like the CD, case etc. There again, alot of PC games you can download from companys still charge full price, just to screw you out of money they havent actually earnt.

Might not be all glorious, Microsoft wont want to just stop complete DVD game sales so it might not be overly cheap. Steam is a similar thing which imo isnt overly cheap compared to buying in the shops.

EDIT:

Plus how long will you need to leave your xbox on downloading a full game.

i doubt it just look at i tunes where a album costs £7.99 to download,i always prefer to pay tesco or play.com the extra quid or two to own the original with all the case and artwork

last time i heard about 360 profit margin they were making money on hardware finally

actually it seems they will make make money next year

lol well thats what he told me, as far as downloading full games etc, i dont think they'll stop doing the physical games, will be nice to have the option of downloading the game though.

Rsi Dave - also background downloads are there for a reason, so that it sucks very little power when your 360 is off but carries on downloading.

can't believe no-one has mentioned this but, where the hell are we going to store these games?

12gb of hdd space is going to hold 2-3 games max, what about all the other stuff you need on there. what happens if your hard drive fails?

Its a shocking idea unless you can plug a dvd writer in and burn it yourslef but then that would allow piracy so they wouldn't do that.

Even if they released a 60gb hdd though, it wouldn't hold to many games?

Wouldn't trust mine to download anything that I paid money for - RROD :dead:

At least with disc you can play it on whatever machine and trade it when you're bored.

120gb HDD has been spied recently, but 100% agree with you!

Not only the space, but what if you dont like something? You cant ebay it and buy something else. Swapping games with a mate will be a pain in the arse and downloading demos still takes ages. Add to that no packaging, no actual disc, no manual, nothing to sell on.

Id rather pay £40 for a game in the normal way than £10 for it that ^^ way.

the hard drive is cack tho...U cant fit bugger all.
What happens when it crashes and u loose all your games?
Slightly off topic but could you play a hacked game on the 360 from an external hard drive? (not that i would tho).
Can you play pc games on the 360?

I had to clear off my HD the other day i wouldnt mind but there's no music on it only a couple of demo's and a handful of save game files. It's way too small for it's current purpose if you ask me let alone putting full games on it too.

if any of you care to look at the us xbox site they are now selling the elite or whatever the black 360 is called with a 120gb hd drive.

as for the hd drive crashing etc all it would take for ms to do is log the games you have paid for etc, so if you deleted them you could save them again onto your hd drive. really not rocket science is it lol.

i think it will be used as a sideline to the normal way fo buying games for people that cant be arsed to go the shops etc or cant get a copy of a new game due to sellout etc, i think its a wicked idea and im sure if ms do it they will make sure it all works ;)

120GB aint very much though, not when your talking about games that are up to 8-9GB in size...

As for keeping a record of the games you bought they already do that with live games.. so its already in place !

I thought the extra drive space was for the microsoft on demand TV shizz?

Even if you dont get hold of an elite once they're sold out the hardware thats in it will replace the present premium system which will be exactly the same only in white.

its not confirmed the elite will come to this country anytime soon, but what about the millions of people that only has 12gb of hard drive space.

If they offer this, i can't see many people taking them up, its hardly the same as downloading an mp3, 8gb games is a totally different kettle of fish!

downloading games from marketplace will be shite. as mentioned the storage isnt in place, and imagine having to delete a game, download a new one, then when you want to play the game you have already deleted again you have to re-download it.

not currently viable with the bandwidth avaliable in the UK imho.
