Fully Comp.... worth it?!

  Monaco 172 (02)
21 3yrs NCB 1 NON fault claim 3 years ago.
Changing from a Rover 200VVC to a 2002 172.

TPFT with current insurer is £80 a month

Changing with a £180 deposit to fully comp is also £80 a month BUT with a £900 excess. Is it worth paying the deposit etc. with an excess as high as that?!

Can anyone suggest a cheaper company, that was on confused that came back with Churchill.

No offence, but how stupid is that question. If you have 3rd party, your excess if your car is damaged is the value of the car, which I'm guessing is a lot more than £900! Of course it's worth it! You may be able to get cheaper, but a very small accident could cause well over £900's worth of damage on the 172.

I understand what your saying, but in the long run including the initial excess plus the additional cost over the next 5years of insurance theres not a lot in it I dont think.

Also going fully comp, if I was to hit a 3rd party to a value of say £600 I would have to find that £600 from somewhere. TPFT means a straight forward claim off me without having to find the money.

Or am I wrong?!

How much does FC cover cost?

How much does 3rd party cover cost?

What's the excess on the FC cover?

How much is the car worth, and how much would it be worth in parts if you did have a worst case scenario crash?

How much extra would you pay for 3 years in insurance if you did make a claim?

Put it all together and you'll have your answer!

I roll with 3rd party because although FC is only a hundred or so more, it's a hundred or so more pounds that I'd have lost because I'm 100% not claiming on an MX5. It's worth more in parts than it is as a whole car so there's not even any point repairing it if I did have a bad crash.

Try a load of companies directly. Normally always cheaper and I've found that the excess on the policies that come out cheapest quotes on confused are always high. Try Admiral, Bell, Elephant (all part of the same group). Greenlight, adrian flux, chris knotts (all good for mods), then all the others.

As a guide, when I was 21 with 3NCB, 3 points, 2 accidents with 1 my fault, group B postcode, I paid just over £1000 with a £350 excess fully comp. Yours is working out at £1140 with £900 excess which is far too high IMO. Obviously it does depend on your postcode rating too, you can check here http://www.carinsuranceexplained.com/car_insurance_explained/insurance_postcode_risk.htm

Try reducing that £900 excess by £100 each time and see how much it goes down by and try other companies as I said above. Surely a better deal out there than that.
