Funny "Clunking" noise, happens randomly

  Punto Evo Abarth
hello, recently ive started getting a clunking noise, sounds like its coming from the engine or sumthing to do with engine (engine mount cv joint i dunno) anyway its a mk1 clio rt 1.4 97. The noise only happens at certain times it does it randomly, it will do it when you go up a hill or sumthing mainly and if put your foot down at low revs it will do it also, sounds more as tho its coming from the passenger side of the car but not sure, also someone at work said the engine moved bit more than it should when you rev it. If anyone knows what could be wrong please let me know as i cant get to a renault dealer for while now due to christmas, also how much on average it will cost to fix, thanks alot for your help.

Engine mounts probably.

If engine is moving loads, probably dogbone mount.. (guessing, but they do seem to go)

When in gear, and you accelerate, does the gear stick move loads?

I changed all three mounts on my Williams (including uprated HillPower dogbone mount) and it's rock solid now!

yer some times it does, i wouldnt know if its loads or not, he said he reckons its the rubber bushing gone on the engine mount or suming?

Yea.. sounds like it to me also.

As I said, changed all 3 of mine and it was so much better.. but mine were quite worn. You might just need a dogbone mount or something!

Well, more good news, it's the easiest to change too.

Shouldn't take much longer than 15/20mins if it comes off OK! (not seized etc..)

ooo this is good news :p how can i check it is this, i dont realy wanna take it to renault to go, hmmmmmmmm yup its that, now lets have a cup of coffee for to waste the 2 hours lol

Well, gearstick moving loads is a good sign that it's had it.
When you accelerate, gearstick shouldn't move at all really..

You have any Renault specialists near ya? Probably a better bet!

latest news, if i put it in second and put my foot down at sorta 2 thousand rpm the gear stick moves back about a inche.

ok wicked thanks for your help then :) dont spose you know anyewhere that sells these? dont wanna go renault, probily cost 50 times as much! lol

Well, I got my mounts from Renault - probably worth paying extra..

My dogbone mount is a HillPower Uprated one, tho.. which is worth having, but dunno if they do any none-16v/Williams ones.

You could always just get to a Renault specialist and they'll change it for ya using Renault parts probably.. shouldn't cost too much!
