future proofing video collection

I have always kept my old Jackanory episodes in 800mb in Xvid in an avi holder but I am considering starting to collect them in the mkv and/or ts. Are there any downsides to this idea? I would obviously like to play them on a HDTV via hdmi. I presume this is ok?

What I mean is that avi is pretty universal in the PC world but I would like to keep my shizzle in higher quailty and be able to watch it on PC or TV well into the future.

well you cant go higher than the source so a .ts file of jackanory thats never was transmitted in hd wont be any better qulaity in a ts than xvid really unless you really compress the xvid
