Gaaah major f**k up - Cams?!

Car  H&R + Pole Position'd Cup
I bought some cams from 'Impey' on here a while back advertised as catcam428's.

I checked them when they arrived and saw that the camshaft said 428 on it. Now I've just got them out again to have a look and 1 of them says 421, where as the other says 428?!?!

Help?! :(

Heres the pics:

Abolutely gutted. :(

Anyone know Impey per chance?

I've sent them a pm and theyve just been online but I didnt get a response.

I see. On the off-chance they have a spare 428 tucked away in a drawer somewhere? :D

Do you have a contact number?

*Update*

Impey was selling them for 'Mark' who previously had them fitted to his car. Mark wants to get in touch with me and sort it out. We shall see...

What you got? if it's 428 IN, and 421 EX I'd be inclined to try it, If it's 421 IN and 428 EX, that's no bad thing in itself, but you might find it doesn't want to idle well if you have fly-by-wire throttle.

Oh dear... I was going to buy them but you got in there before me :(

I'm not too sure mate. How would I know? I've got fly-by-wire throttle but it's a road going car and I was planning on fitting them with the Super2000 kit.

**Update**

Apparently it was Mark who used to work at GDI that Impey sold on his behalf?

At work at the minute but think the 421 is the exhaust cam then.

Dont know, but he better have the other one!

If you let me know if the 421 is the inlet or the exhaust cam (exhaust has the stud in it) I'll plumb it into my 4R model and see if it might run ;-)

What do the lobes look like as in the photo one of them seems a bit iffy!

Cheers
M

have a measure up? maybe the '421 was originally slightly damaged, and was then re-profiled to '428 profile?

The 421 has the threaded bolt in the end so guessing this is the exhaust cam.

They all seem to be fine mate.

I'll give them a measure.

Icarus - Let me know what you want me to do :)

im not saying they wouldnt be fine, what i mean is if someone had a '421 blank on a previous engine, which somehow got damaged (the camshaft), then you can send them back to the factory and they will touch them up/re-profile them.

so really what im saying is, you need to make sure it is actually a '421 profile.

Yeh I understand what youre saying mate. The 2 profiles look very similar to the eye.

This may seem a stupid question but how would I go about measuring them without any specialist bit of kit?

I'm sure if I could get in touch with 'Mark' then he would be able to enlighten me on the subject.

timing disc and a dti to fully plot versus crank angle.

or with a micrometer measure the overall height of the lobe, and subtract the base-circle diamter....this will give you peak cam lift.

Right, just measured them with a skinfold caliper so can't guarantee perfectly accurate results :o

I know these are going to be in no way accurate but the lobe on the 428 seems ever so slightly bigger by 0.5mm ish

Here are the measurements...

are they cat cams? hard to tell from the pics if the lobes are part of the shaft or there push on!

they look like billets, i was more on about the pulley ends

why the f**k would you run a 428 and a 421? a tuning company trying to be "clever" maybe?

im not at home all this week but im pretty sure the lobes are part of the shaft.

So would it make sense for the lobes on the 421s to be slightly smaller? I thought with 421s being a wilder cam that the lobes would be bigger.

still waiting for a reply from mark :-/

Does anyone have the number for the guy from catcams per chance?
