Gaming PC Questions :D

  RS Meg 175
Ok im building a new pc just weighing up different options atm
but can any of you IT wizards recomend a good moderately priced motherboard? ideall with SLI enabled and one that can take 1066 DDR2

Also im going to be using the pc mostly for gaming etc so i think im going to go for the E8400 Dual Core Intel instead of Quad Core Intel Q6600 is this wise?

Cheers
Matt

The choice of motherboards is just mesmorising. I wont comment because im no major expert, but good luck with it all. "Speccing" a PC is a ball ache

Go with the quad core and overclock it. They are hitting 3.2 - 3.6ghz on air with ease. And I have found game utilize them fully. UT3 puts mine at 100% usage. As do a few other games. Multithreaded apps are here now so get something to fully utilize them. In a few more months dual cores will be dead.

Quad cores will be midrange as the 8 core cpu's find their way into the higher end segment.

do you really need quad core ?

Personal preference lies with AMD and nvidia. Why dont you head over to overclockers.co.uk and price a system up for yourself.

Try a 6400+ black edition AMD Athlon 64, clock runs at 3.2Ghz.

Asus are brillaint motherboards, granted, for someone wanting to overclock, they arent the best, and come with limited, easy to overclock "options". The crosshair motherboard is good, but it isnt exactly cheap.

As for graphics, the new 9600Gt is allegedly very good, and the price is bloody good too. beats ATI's flagship card (iirc) by a little bit.

Unfortunately for me because I used to be a thoroughbred AMD fanboy, Intel have now overtaken them since th Core duo and I have for the first time in my life converted to the dark side! Intel produce far better CPU's now because AMD are flogging old technology. I hope AMD have something in the pipeline within the next year to make an impact though.

Q6600 G0 ftw, cheap and a great overclocker. Plus my Asus Maximus Extreme is a great overclocker thanks :)
