Gear Box Oil

  Skoda Fabia vRS

can this ever be changed on an RT ?

or do you just have to top it up

also if i want to top up what do i use, somethin from Halfords preferably cos tryin to track down Elf stuff is really hard

Ok so i am a newbie, but i have been using forums for a bit, but that last comments " ^^Bump^^ is completally lost on me. What does it mean?

lol, its a common forum thing, its just i was posting myself to bump my topic back to the top so people notice it

apart from the top up plug, i dunno if there is a drain plug, but when i changed the clutch, the drive shafts had to come out, so the oil fell out of there, its only a few bolts to get teh shaft out, left hand side one is easiest.
ANyway, topping it up was the hardest part, took ages to get 4ltrs or so into that tiny hole.

The 16v has a drian plug not sure about the rt though.

Mat.

Just looked and they all have a drian plug just behind the plastic tray underneath your gearbox.

how many litres does it take then, it would take a while to fill back up through that tiny hole

haha, in a G/box that has done thousands of miles, you might be better off sticking with normal oil. it dont make much difference, i just filled up with carlube stuff casue it was cheapest at the time. Halford stuff is expensive, as is castrol, and your gonna need 4 ltrs as its bout 3.8 or something. And it took me almost 2 hours to fill it up again, there is no way you can get the bottle near the fill hole, so i had to use long vacuum pipe, and it took ages!!!!

BRUN,

Ive got some silkolene f/s to put in my mine when i get round to it.
Let you know if i get it done before you.

cheers mate

after puttin the Silkolene engine oil in im really impressed with there stuff so id like to use it, funds are VERY low though so i might end up using somethin cheaper

i had a funnel too, but it dont reach the top up hole, so i had to add a pipe to the end, and this was vacuum pipe, small diameter, and took ages to fill, as it basically dribbled though the pipe. how did you do it?

its just about long enough it comes with a long tube on it as standard.
costs 3.99 or something like that worth it though makes it so much easier.

well i went to Halfords today, not got paid yet so i cant do it yet

but i looked at some prices

Halfords was about £5.50 a litre, whereas the part synthetic version was about £8 a litre

the Castrol was about £9+ a litre i think and i wasnt even sure whether is was part synthetic or not

what is this API GL-5 or 4 etc

what is better and is it ok to go for one with a diff GL rating ?

  Skoda Fabia vRS

well if anyone wants to know then u shud only get an oil with rating specified for your gearbox

its to do with the amount of additives in the oil and getting the wrong one can lead to corrosion

Did someone mention carlube oil, I thought my valvers box was a little noisy (not excessive, but noticable on smooth roads on your own). Went to get the recommended 75/80 oil but couldnt get any locally, so bought carlube semi 75/90.

The box took about 3/4 litre to top up, but there is still that slight noise, and to be honest i aint noticed much difference. Do i have a prob with box and/or is that oil ok, any advice/second opinions welcome please

y not drain it all an put fresh in, if toppin up has helped then that might work

or try some ZX1 in it

or both ?

  Skoda Fabia vRS

o and is the carlube semi the right API GL rating for your box, its VERY important it is

Not sure, did it in a hurry but thinking i might change it all now. What do you recommend or what is the correct grade (API GL) that you are on about.

i dunno what to recommend, i havent really looked yet

but, i do love Silkolene oils and there racing one is only £8 a litre and is fully synthetic

When I get a chance I am going to drain, and refill will with decent stuff, until then, I reckon it was worthwhile topping up as it took 3/4 litre, and they hold a few litres, so could only help, will look up the right stuff, cheers

well went to the Total garage on the way home tonight

they have Elf Tranself B 90W for £2.50 per 500ml

i aint called my local Renault dealer yet but i might just use this stuff

Been following this post and did a bit of research about all these strange numbers to do with API and GL numbers see redline site for loads of info.

Im not certain but doesnt the clio use synchromesh gears? I have read that GL5 oil is mainly for rear differential cars with an uncoupled differential and transmission? I think the clio has a coupled differential and transmission as majority of front wheel drive cars.

Now for the Megane coupe at least the rated oil is 75W80 GL4. GL5 oils may shorten the life of your synchros.

Renaults have a tendency to allow water to seep into the transmission and so this results in more notchy shifting. I have done 36000 miles in my cars and have noticed this and hope that a change in oil will improve the situation.

Anyway as BRUN said stick with the rating for your car.
