When you turn the ignition key to the last position just before you start the engine the change gear up light should light up and go out when you start up. If it does but no light shows when you get to 7rpm you have a faulty sensor, if it dosnt light up at all the green bulb needs replacing... All clio 172s have the change up gear light. My local dealer dosnt know his ass from his elbow either.

this is true from what some of the guys with mk1s say, some came with one and some didnt, i think it is dependant on the build date of the car as to whether you have one or not

Bizzare that! I have a 03 172 and a mk1 172 which came from the first batch when they were released and they both have shift lights which is inculded in the manual. Me thinks Renault Needs to make there minds UP!!!!!!!!!!!

The later Mk1 172s didnt have the shift light. All Mk2 models should have it.

Not that its a great deal of use anyway....

mines a 2003 and has the light - its bleedin useless, how the hell are u supposed to see it, when ur foot to the floor concentrating on where ur going?

should have mounted it alot higher and used one of these ultra bright LEDs

no, its as Jonathon and Mike said, kinda hit and miss depending on production date. Not heard of any mk2s without them though?

Jonnyboy, mines an 03 import from Holland and has the shift light.

Its really just there to suggest you shift before you hit the rev limit. Its not there to show optimal shift time. Plus its really out of your eyeline when driving, which would make it useless as an optimal shift light anyway.

Mines a March 2001 172 import and as far as i know my 172 doesnt have a shift light - would be nice to have for the novelty value. But really if u cant tell when to change gear without a little light telling you too, perhaps u shouldnt be driving a car. lol:)

I stand corrected!!

I have got a gear change light, its on the outside of the clocks, didnt see it! also cos Im running in I havent seen it till today and it kicks in right on the rev limiter anyway so a bit pointless really!!

2002 172 and I have a change light... it is a bit out of the way . but you can still see it if you looking straight ahead.

In first gear it comes to quick to change when you see it you got to guess really, but 2nd 3rd etc. if you change on the light IMO you get the fastest acceleration.
