Gear knob for mk2 ph1 1.6 16v or RSi

I want to put my mk1 172 gear knob on and how hard to remove the leather gear knob?? I done it on the bottom standard clio but I don't want to damage the leather gear knob:S

Not sure there is a way to get the old one off without damaging it in some way unless it'll just twist off ?

twist with a big pair of grips normally but this can mark it put some rags around it?

have to cut the old one out careful & 172 gear knob is hard to put it in, it took me 1hr to do it.
